A parametric surface fitting method based is presented on NURBS, which enables scattered points to be used for interpolation and approximation and then to generate smooth surfaces with the least square method. The algorithms and relevant software derived and developed are successfully applied in automotive body outer surface design. The method ensures the calculation stability and smooth surface quality.

Lan FC, Chen JQ, Lin JG, 2005, Research on parameterized modelling and application for car, Jisuanji Jicheng Zhizao Xitong/Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems, CIMS, Vol: 11, Pages: 183-188, ISSN: 1006-5911
A parametric FE (finite element) model for a sedan car is created in terms of the common structural features of cars. Also, autobody conceptual development platform is set up according to the procedure and the specification in autobody conceptual design, which includes main modules and methods for analysis and optimisation. Information integration between design platform and autobody parametric FE model is realised, and project management and the concept design process can easily be used within the integrated environment. The system fulfills CAD/CAE integration and optimisation for a structural scheme at initial design stage (conceptual design), and, consequently, increases efficiency and reliability for autobody structural design.
Chen J, Lan F, Lin J, 2005, Construction of non-four-sided patches and application in autobody design, Jixie Gongcheng Xuebao/Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering, Vol: 41, Pages: 69-73, ISSN: 0577-6686
Method for constructing N-sided patches with B-spline on the basis of Gregory N-sided surface theory is presented. The attributes make the N-sided patches be able to interpolate the boundaries and derivatives over the boundaries which are represented with 3-ordered B-spline. Firstly Gregory method is used to construct a N-sided patch, and then, according to the patch's data , an N-sided surface can be generated with n rectangular surface patches satisfying G1 continuity between those patches.

Chen JQ, Wei W, Lan FC, et al., 2004, Research and application of PDM for auto-body development, Jisuanji Jicheng Zhizao Xitong/Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems, CIMS, Vol: 10, Pages: 144-149, ISSN: 1006-5911
To improve development efficiency of auto-body and shorten development cycle, Product Data Management (PDM) technique was applied in the auto-body design process. At first general framework and implementation environment were established for the PDM system, which was integrated with auto-body development process and based on computer network and distributed computer systems. Then the main function modules were developed for auto-body products supported by Oracle 8i database, and, it was successfully applied in the light truck development project management of an auto manufacturer in China. The result of this application indicates that this could effectively manage product data of auto-body development, greatly improve auto-body development efficiency and support the concurrent engineering of auto-body products.

Lan FC, Chen JQ, Lin JG, et al., 2004, Springback simulation and analysis in U-typed sheet metal forming processes, Suxing Gongcheng Xuebao/Journal of Plasticity Engineering, Vol: 11, Pages: 78-84, ISSN: 1007-2012
The springback phenomenon in sheet metal forming is a main problem affecting the accuracy of formed parts. Well-controlling of springback needs an accurate prediction of springback quantity. This paper concentrates on the studies of springback characteristics in forming a U-typed sheet metal component using DYNAFORM. Numerical simulation results of the influential factors are obtained, which include blank holder force, punch-and-die clearance, contact frictional coefficient, and material properties, and finally the effect of each of these factors on springback is comprehensively discussed.
