I am a senior consultant specialist in stroke medicine, internal medicine and geriatric medicine. I work as a stroke consultant at Charing Cross Hospital where I am the director of the Imperial stroke education programme and clinical lead for SSNAP. I am also an honorary senior lecturer at the Department of Brain Sciences, Imperial College London where I am the lead for original stroke research and director of the Imperial post-stroke cognitive research group. I previously worked as a stroke consultant and head of department in Bournemouth (2006-13), medical director for regional stroke network (2008-12), visiting professor in medicine at Bournemouth University (2009-18), and clinical associate professor in geriatric medicine at The University of Hong Kong (2013-2018).
I qualified from the Universities of Bristol (Medicine 1994), Southampton (MPhil 2000), Edinburgh (MD 2002), University College London Institute of Neurology at Queens Square (PG Certificate in Clinical Neurology with distinction 2006), Cornell University (Plant-based Nutrition 2015) and University of California San Francisco (Dementia Scholarship 2015). I have published over 120 scientific articles and book chapters, and won several major awards. My special interests are brain health, healthy ageing, exercise and nutrition.
I am a professional member or fellow of the American Heart Association (AHA), American Stroke Association (ASA), British & Irish Association of Stroke Physicians (BIASP), British Geriatrics Society (BGS), British Society of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine (BSPRM), European Stroke Organization (ESO), Royal College of Physicians (RCP), Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH), World Stroke Organization (WSO), Hong Kong College of Physicians (HKCP), Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM). I am a RCP examiner and member of two ESO committees.
My private practice is as a stroke and neurorehabilitation consultant at the Cleveland Clinic London. I manage patients with complex stroke, rehabilitation and ageing-related issues, advising on risk factor control, future prognosis, frailty avoidance, medicine management, and healthy ageing. My approach to treatment is holistic, empowering them through lifestyle changes, strength and conditioning, and optimal nutrition to improve the well-being of their body, mind and spirit (book appointments here).
