Summary

Hello and welcome!

Here you’ll be able to learn a little bit about me from an academic point of view. Happy reading!

I am a physician-scientist, who has been with Imperial College for 22 years of which ten years with Imperial’s new medical school in Singapore. During this period, I held variety of roles from being the founding director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Digital Health and Health Education to the Founding Director of Centre for Population Health Sciences at LKC Medicine, joint Medical School between Imperial College London and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

In summer 2023 I moved to King’s College London to lead the School of Life Course and Population Sciences and remain a visiting professor at Imperial.

Throughout my career I blended academic, policy, management and clinical work. I served in a wide range of roles including founding Global Digital Health Unit, as a Director of Public Health and Primary Care and Lead Director for Integrated Care at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (one of the largest hospitals in Europe), Director of National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Primary Care Research Network and co-director of NIHR Comprehensive Local Research Network for London (NW), Medical Director and Chair of a Professional Executive Committee of a Primary Care Trust, Primary Care and Research Adviser to the Editor of the BMJ, a founding director for the Imperial GP Specialty Training, a member of Imperial College’s School of Public Health board, an adviser to the OECD, the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, World Bank and others. I continue to serve in a range of other roles including as a Board Member of the BMC MedicineJournal of Global Health; an Editor of the Cochrane Collaboration and Visiting Senior Researcher, Department of Family Medicine, University of Ljubljana. Throughout this time I remained a practicing GP.

Research

Research, in essence, can be distilled into a triad: think, play, do. This involves generating innovative ideas, exploring various possibilities, and experimenting to assess their feasibility, utility, and cost-effectiveness. Each stage — thinking, playing, and doing — is subject to stringent scientific scrutiny, ensuring that the research is not only creative but also robust and grounded in empirical evidence.

My research spans digital health, health systems, primary care and population health research and innovation. I am deeply committed to integrating this varied expertise to offer a comprehensive perspective and system solutions. This approach not only fosters innovative ideas and leadership but also ensures a firm foundation in evidence. It’s this blend of knowledge and boldness that drives me to make a meaningful impact in the field.

Teaching and supervision

I like to teach. Hardly anything can be as challenging as being a good teacher. Why? Because “setting an example is not the main means of influencing another, it is the only means.” (Einstein)

I supervise PhD and Masters students. If you are interested in doing a PhD or research with me you are very welcome to get in touch.

Free time activities

OK, I’ll share a little bit of personal information too. I have never been quite able to decide whether I more like mountains or sea. So I tend to go to both. Below is a photo of one of my favourite Croatian islands.
