Julian Jones is a Professor of Biomaterials and Associate Head of Department for Research. Prior to joining the Academic Staff with a Royal Academy of Engineering/ EPSRC Research Fellowship (2004), he completed his PhD with Larry Hench in 2002. He joined the department having obtained an MEng in Metallurgy and the Science of Materials from Oxford (1999). His research interests are in biomaterials for regenerative medicine, particularly Bioglass related materials. His team's work on inorganic/ organic hybrids has produced tough and flexible bioactive scaffolds suitable for tissue engineering applications.
He has written 3 textbooks:
His research group's research interests involve the development of strong porous scaffolds for regenerative medicine; porous materials for minimally invasive diagnosis; tough sol-gel hybrids; therapeutic nanoparticles; 3D printing; bioactive materials; sol-gel chemistry; cell responses to biomaterials.
He is Fellow of the American Ceramics Society, Insitute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and the Society for Glass Technology and the Chair of the Coordinating Technical Committee of the International Congress on Glass (ICG). He served as the Chair of the Bioceramics Division of the American Ceramics Society (2020-21). Awards include the 2022 Kroll Medal (IOM3); a 2016 International Society for Ceramics in Medicine Excellence Award; the 2014 Vittorio Gottardi Award (ICG) and the 2010 Robert L. Coble Award (American Ceramics Society).
