I am an environmental epidemiologist working on planetary health and mostly focus on low- and middle-income countries. At the School of Public Health, I am supporting the leadership and management of the NIHR Global Health Research Centre on Non-Communicable Diseases and Environment Change with India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia as focus countries.

My research interests include

  • impacts of global environmental changes such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and land use change on human nutrition, food security, and health, and
  • development and evaluation of transformative solutions to the health impacts of global environmental changes and their drivers.

On impacts, my research is increasingly focussing on multiplicative and cascading effects of environmental changes. I am interested in the development of new approaches to their analyses and monitoring using epidemiological methods applied to cohort and panel data in conjunction with Earth Observations.

On solutions, I enjoy using transdisciplinary participatory stakeholder engagement methods to identify opportunities for change, co-design and implement solutions. My research involves machine learning-assisted evidence synthesis methods to inform the development of transformative solutions. I use epidemiological and mixed methods approaches for evaluation.

Some of my recent research activities include the Lancet Pathfinder Commission, Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, Complex Urban Systems and Health (CUSSH) consortium, Planetary Health Watch, and DFG Research Unit on Climate Change and Health in Sub Saharan Africa.

Previously I held appointments at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the UK, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto in Canada, United Nations University in Germany, and Latvian Environmental Investment Fund.

I have acquired a PhD in Environmental Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, and the 1st Class BSc(Hons) in Sustainable Development from the University of St Andrews.
