Summary

Background

Kartik is an orthopaedic surgeon and NIHR Clinical Lecturer working at the MSk Lab and the Biomechanics Research Group

He obtained his undergraduate medical degree from Guy's, King's and St Thomas' Medical School, a BSc. in Surgery and Anaesthesia, and an MSc. in Surgical Innovation. His research investigated the 3D morphology of femoroacetabular impingement, and the use of shearwave ultrasound elastrography in hip disease. Kartik was an Academic Foundation Doctor at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, at the University of Oxford, where he worked on developing an arthroscopic simulation programme for surgical training. He was then appointed as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Orthopaedics at Imperial College London, prior to undertaking a PhD titled 'Technology and hip arthroplasty: acquiring skills and improving outcomes'. He supervises PhD, MSc, and BSc students at the MSk Lab.

Research interests

Kartik's research interests, working with Professor Justin Cobb and Professor Jonathan Jeffers are:

  • Clinical and functional outcomes after all-ceramic hip resurfacing
  • The optimisation of anterior approach hip arthroplasty through improving instrumentation, implants, and surgical technique
  • The measurement of implant migration after arthroplasty
  • The implementation of AI-assisted diagnostics, 3D surgical planning, and virtual and augmented reality in orthopaedics

His PhD research was supported by a Royal College of Surgeons of England Fellowship, Johnson & Johnson, the Michael Uren Foundation and CW . It has received the Simulation and Innovation Award from the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), the Andrew Sprowson Translational Research Award from the British Orthopaedic Research Society (BORS), and the Clinical Study Award from Computer Aided Orthopaedic Surgery International (CAOS). Kartik has been awarded highly coveted New Investigator Awards by the International Society of Technology in Arthroplasty (ISTA), BORS, and the British Hip Society.

Kartik is an Associate Surgical Specialty Lead for T&O, and a member of the Research and Innovation Reference Group, at the Royal College of Surgeons (Eng.). He is a Primary Editor for the Bone and Joint Journal; and chairs the SICOT Enabling Technologies committee.

Clinical interests

Kartik is a fellow in revision hip and knee arthroplasty at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford. He has completed a fellowship in hip preservation surgery with Mr Johan Witt at University College London Hospital; and orthopaedic speciality training on the North West London training programme. He has learnt further techniques in hip and knee preservation and arthroplasty with Dr Paul Beaule (Ottawa), Dr Michael Leunig (Zurich), and Dr Edwin Su (HSS). He is a member of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, and Team Doctor for the London Skolars Rugby League Club.

EDUCATIONAL ROLES

Kartik is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He teaches on the BSc. in Surgical Design, Technology and Innovation. He is a Module Lead and lecturer on the MEd. in Surgical Education, and Deputy Lead and lecturer on the MSc. in Surgical Innovation. In 2019, he received the President's Award from Imperial College for his contributions to surgical education.
