Polymeric hollow fiber membranes are in current use for a number of process applications, including filtration, desalination, gas separation, and biochemical reactions. However, this membrane configuration is seldom found in ceramic membranes, possibly due to the lack of methods available in producing the ceramic membranes in hollow fiber geometry. It would be interesting to introduce a method for preparation of hollow fiber ceramic membranes, as this would unfold their applications to areas where high-temperature operation precludes the use of existing polymeric hollow fiber membranes. This chapter aims to elaborate the production of hollow fiber ceramic membranes using a phase inversion/sintering method, which is a three-step process, including (1) preparation of a spinning suspension; (2) spinning of ceramic hollow fiber precursors; and (3) final sintering. A detailed discussion on this method is provided and examples on fabrication and applications of yittria stabilized zirconia and various perovskite hollow fiber membranes are then given.
