Summary

Professor Long R Jiao is a professor of surgery at Imperial College and  consultant surgeon in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at Royal Marsden Hospital, having studied in medicine at the Royal London Hospital Medical College and trained at the former Royal Postograduate Medical School, Guy's and St Thomas' and South East Hospitals. He was the chair of pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery at Hammersmith Hospital before he moved to Royal Marsden Hospital to set up the 1st Robotic Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic surgery unit in the UK.  He is one of the regional programme directors for surgical training and the court of examiners for both MRCS and FRCS for the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England, Ireland, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers in journals such as Annals of Surgery, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Hepatology and Lancet. He published the 1st article on radiofrequency in liver cancer in the world which has been cited extensively worldwide. His main research interests include surgical technology and cancer biology, and early detection for pancreatic cancer. He has set up a minimum invasive unit at Hammersmith Hospital for hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB)  diseases, performing Whipple's operation and major liver resection laparoscopically as routine.  Over the last 4 years, he has developed robotic HPB surgery in the UK, having performed and published the 1st Robotic Whipple's operation for pancreatic cancer and the 1st major liver and synchronous liver resection for liver and biliary cancer in the UK.  He has developed a broad clinical and laboratory programme encompassing gold standards in operative procedure as well as genomic and proteomics research. He has invented a few innovative surgical procedures such as RALPPS to induce liver regeneration prior to major liver resection and non touch and new anastomotic techniques for pancreatic operation to improved the outcomes of surgery for pancreatic cancer.   His current research focus is on new biomarkers for early detection of pancreatic cancer and recurrent disease after curative pancreatic resection for cancer. His ambition is to improve the survival of pancreatic cancer.

He is in charge of clinical and educational supervision of surgical trainees at the Northwest Thames which has been featured on the TV programme of "School of Surgery'  and is the local chair for postgraduate study.  He is invovled in undergradute teaching for medical students and medical schoool interviews for students. He is supervising a number of PhD and MD students. He is the course lead for two surgical MSc courses.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, International Hepatopancreaticobiliary Association, and the American Association of Clinical Oncology, and sits on the advisory Boards of a few pharmaceutical committes. He is on the editorial board of a number of world leading hepatopancreaticobiliary journals.
