Villafana ER, Kir'yanov AV, Minassian A, et al., 2005, Diode-side-pumped Nd:YVO<inf>4</inf> laser Q-switched with LiF:F <inf>2</inf>- saturable absorber, Laser Physics, Vol: 15, Pages: 570-578, ISSN: 1054-660X
Passive Q-switching (PQS) of a diode-side-pumped Nd: YVO4 laser using a LiF: F2 crystal as a sat-urable absorber is reported. Using the grazing-incidence cavity geometry, we obtain trains of giant pulses of duration as short as ∼10 ns and peak power of hundreds of watts. The laser efficiency and beam quality in the PQS regime are shown to essentially depend on the cavity arrangement and output coupler reflectivity. In particular, a maximum output power of 18.5 W in high-quality (TEM00 mode) PQS operation is obtained at a pump power of 38 W and in an asymmetrical cavity with an output coupler of reflectivity 30%. A theoretical modeling of the PQS Nd:YVO4/LiF:F2- laser is performed as well; its results are demonstrated to be in agreement with the experimental data. We describe the use of saturable gain media as the basis for adaptive holography for exciting new devices for measurement and laser control. Specifically, we detail the formation of a gain grating acting as an adaptive beam combiner for high sensitivity interferometry with speckle-beams. This addresses a novel solution for on-line diagnostics and information transfer in hostile environments where speckle presents a fundamental limitation. Our interferometer provides capability for industrial non-destructive testing by remote laser detection of ultrasonic vibration of rough surfaces, but also has application in medical diagnostics with diffuse reflection from human tissue and free-space optical communications and environmental monitoring where atmospheric turbulence is the major problem.

A diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser is demonstrated that has a reciprocal self-intersecting loop cavity with self-organization by formation of a dynamic holographic grating induced by the generating beam. Continuous-wave high spatial quality generation (M2 < 1.2) with 9.6 W of power and 32% optical efficiency is obtained. Spectral compositions and temporal dynamics are investigated as functions of diode-pumping power.

Thompson BA, Jackson T, Minassiam A, et al., 2003, Unidirectional ring laser using novel parasitic directionality control
In this paper we have shown a simple technique for creating unidirectional ring lasers without the inclusion of an intracavity isolator. Experimentally and numerically, this device gives high output powers, up to 14 W from 30 W of diode pumping, in a TEM/sub 00/ and single longitudinal mode of operation. The system was numerically modelled, with incorporation of multiple frequencies, polarisations and directions of oscillation. © 2003 IEEE.
