Degenerate four-wave mixing in the saturable gain of a flash-lamp-pumped Nd:YAG amplifier has been investigated. Three different geometries are examined in which the probe beam experiences (a) one pass, (b) two passes, and (c) four passes of the four-wave interaction region. It is found that multipassing the gain medium has a dramatic effect on the efficiency of the process, with a phase-conjugate reflectivity of 2500 and a conjugate energy extraction efficiency of greater than 200% demonstrated.

Four-wave mixing in a saturated gain medium has been modeled numerically, and the predictions for the reflectivity have been compared with experiments carried out in the laser-pumped dye Rhodamine 6G. It is demonstrated that the saturable absorption of the inversion laser pump has a dramatic influence on the intensity dependence of the four-wave-mixing reflectivity.

Crofts GJ, Wong GKN, Damzen MJ, 1990, Stimulated Brillouin scattering with optical feedback: An enhanced phase conjugator with wide operational power range, Pages: 282-283

The use of optical feedback to reduce significantly the threshold power requirement, increase reflectivity, and improve the pulse conjugate fidelity of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SOS) process is reported. Optical feedback is accomplished by taking the throughput of the pump beam from the SBS cell and redirecting it to overlap with the main pump input at a small angle. The feedback of the pump enhances the acoustic wave generation, and the Stokes radiation retracing the feedback path acts as a seeding signal. The Stokes radiation is generated by a Brillouin four-wave mixing process and provides a signal that is stronger and more correlated to the pump than the spontaneous noise would be. The consequence is a significant enhancement of the SBS process leading to a reduction in threshold power and high reflectivity, particularly for the conjugate part of the signal. The improvement in phase conjugate fidelity (PCF) was assessed for a pulsed frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser system. Throughout most of the input energy range the PCF was >85% with feedback. When the feedback arm was blocked a significant reduction in fidelity was observed. In this experiment, at the highest powers used, the feedback/SBS reflectivity was 90%, at which time the PCF was approximately 90%.

An experimental investigation of a phase-conjugate laser resonator using a Nd:YAG gain medium and incorporating Brillouin-enhanced four-wave mixing is reported. Phase-conjugate reflectivities of greater than unity and stable oscillation between a single laser frequency and a counterpropagating Stokes frequency are demonstrated.

Damzen MJ, Hutchinson MH, 1985, Technique for measuring phase-conjugation fidelity by heterodyning signals., Opt Lett, Vol: 10, Pages: 40-42, ISSN: 0146-9592

A simple heterodyning technique is described that permits a rigorous measurement of the phase-conjugate fraction of a scattered beam in Brillouin scattering. A general expression for interferometry using phase-conjugate mirrors is derived. The applications of the technique to the measurement of laser phase structure and intensity-dependent phase shifts, and also for high-resolution determination of Brillouin acoustic frequencies, are discussed.

By the formation of two Brillouin mirrors at either end of a methane chamber, a Brillouin cavity has been produced that is capable of oscillation when injected by a laser pulse. The pulse-compressing mechanisms of the Brillouin mirrors cause a train of intense short-duration pulses to be produced, and the Brillouin cavity displays the characteristic of a phase-conjugate resonator.

Highly efficient compression of laser pulses down to 1 nsec in duration by stimulated Brillouin scattering has been demonstrated. Compression ratios of ~10 and energy-conversion efficiencies >70% have been produced. Several compressor systems have been investigated, including the use of tapered waveguides, long-focal-length geometries, and generator-amplifier systems.
