Summary

Research Focus

My current research projects are mainly in the field of gynaecological pathology, with particular interest in borderline ovarian tumours (BOTs).  Over the past 5 years I have set up an integrated research plan to study borderline ovarian tumours, an understudied but significant type of ovarian tumours. The plan included, a national survey of the current management of BOTs in the UK, setting up a national multicentre study, and laboratory studies of the molecular pathology of BOTs.  This work provides a unique integrated and in depth investigation of BOTs.  Results to date are now presented in 4 publications.  A paper recently published in the American Journal of Pathology, one of the top journals in the field of Pathology, represents the first report of the presence of molecular subtypes of BOTs identified by gene methylation profiling, a concept further confirmed by genome wide gene expression profiling (manuscript in press in Modern Pathology).  These findings have the potential of influencing changes in the current classification of BOTs with implications on diagnosis and treatment protocols.

In addition to original research papers I published several case reports, some of which presented the first report of a new histological variant of a rare tumour (e.g. El-Bahrawy et al Pancreas 2010), a new histological feature (e.g. Bagwan et al Histopathology 2008), new gene mutation in a rare syndrome (e.g. Barker et al Int J Gynecol Pathol. 2010).  Some of these reports were the initiators of international collaborations with groups interested in these rare and unusual entities.

I am collaborating with several research teams within Imperial College London and in other national and international institutions.
