Hu J, Bell M, 2007, Spatial econometrics of congestion prediction for in- vehicle route guidance, 1st Spatial Econometrics Association Conference
Current research on in-vehicle information system, more specifically dynamic routeguidance, is offering the prospect of improved individual trip efficiency by enablingdrivers to avoid recurrent and propagated road congestion. One of the next majoradvances in developing route guidance systems will be the short-term prediction ofcongestion in road networks. This will inform the driver about the road networkconditions one or two hours in advance and assist them to avoid anticipatedcongestion. This paper discusses the application of spatial econometric modelling incongestion prediction, by using historical Traffic Message Channel (TMC) data storedin the vehicle navigation unit. The nature of TMC data is in the form of a time seriesof geo-referenced congestion warning messages which is generally collected fromvehicles acting as traffic probes. The prediction of future congestion could be basedon the previous year of TMC data. Synthetic TMC data generated by microscopictraffic simulation for the network of Coventry are used in this study. The feasibilityof using econometric modelling techniques to predict congestion is explored. Resultsare presented at the end. The study will add new content to applied spatialeconometrics in the transport field.

Hu J, Kaparias I, Bell M, 2007, Identification of link congestion dependence patterns for dynamic route guidance, 14th World Congress on Intelligent Transportation Systems
This study explores the congestion dependence relationship among links using microsimulation, based on data from a real road network. The work is motivated by recent innovations to improvethe reliability of Dynamic Route Guidance (DRG) systems. By adding a function to predict thecongestion in the road network, the reliability of DRG systems can be significantly enhanced. The identification of link congestion dependence patterns is considered to be the first steptowards this target. Previous work on link reliability and failure dependence relationships isreviewed and the results of simulation and analysis are presented here.

Bell MGH, 2006, Mixed route strategies for the risk-averse shipment of hazardous materials, NETW SPAT ECON, Vol: 6, Pages: 253-265, ISSN: 1566-113X
Previous work on the risk-averse routing of hazardous materials has focussed on ways of finding the safest route between a pair of points. For repeated shipments where the arc incident probabilities are unknown, it is shown that the safest strategy is in general to use a mix of routes. Starting with a simple two-route example, it is shown that exposure can be significantly reduced by sharing shipments between routes. In order to determine the safest set of routes and the safest share of traffic between these routes, a minmax problem is formulated. The properties of the optimality conditions are explored. A simple solution heuristic based on a shortest path algorithm and the method of successive averages is proposed. Connections to game theory provide useful insights into the nature of the solution.
