Aortic dissection is an acute emergency requiring the interdisciplinary cooperation between vascular surgery, interventional radiology, cardiology, and cardiothoracic surgery to aggressively treat this condition that to this day carries a high mortality rate. Aortic dissection (AD) is part of the spectrum of acute aortic syndromes which also include intramural hematoma, penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer, aneurysmal leak, and aortic transection.

Lee SL, Riga C, Crowie L, et al., 2011, An instantiability index for intra-operative tracking of 3D anatomy and interventional devices, Pages: 49-56, ISSN: 0302-9743
The tracking of tissue deformation, imaging probes and surgical instruments is an integral part of intra-operative surgical guidance. While the recent introduction of shape instantiation provides a systematic framework for tracking 3D anatomy in real-time, deviations to the desired imaging location can affect the accuracy of the predicted shape. To examine the sensitivity of the prescribed image planes to such errors, we introduce in this paper a new Instantiability Index for providing the intrinsic level of robustness while using such scan planes for the tracking of anatomy and interventional devices. Optimisation of the Index is applied to 3D anatomical reconstruction and the localisation of an intraoperative imaging device. Results are shown on detailed phantom experiments for both real-time 3D shape instantiation and imaging catheter tracking. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Hamady M, Lister GG, Aubès M, et al., 2011, Study of photometric properties of high-pressure mercury discharge with thallium iodide additives (HgTℓI) using the ray-tracing method, Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, Vol: 44, ISSN: 0022-3727
The photometric properties of HgTℓI high intensity discharge (HID) lamps have been calculated by solving the radiation transport equations in the discharge, using the ray-tracing method. The partial pressures of the various chemical species in the plasma are computed assuming the plasma is in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), using a curve fit to an experimentally measured temperature profile. The plasma is also assumed to be fully mixed, implying a constant mercury/thallium ratio throughout the discharge tube. The spectral line broadening includes neutral Van der Waals and charged particle Stark broadening. The potential influence of 'de-mixing' on the spectra is also considered. © 2011 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Hamady M, Aubès M, Zissis G, 2010, A validated model for radiation transport in an HID lamp using the ray tracing method, Journal of Light and Visual Environment, Vol: 34, Pages: 150-156, ISSN: 0387-8805
Radiation transport in high intensity discharge lamps (HID) can be calculated using ray tracing technique solving directly radiative transfer equation. The calculations reported in the present paper have been performed by applying basic equations of radiation theory in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) plasma and assuming the cylindrical symmetry. Neither axial variations nor convention have been taken into account. Experimental values for pressure and temperature profiles are used to calculate the radiative and photometric characteristics of the lamp. Neutral Van der Waals and charged particles Stark broadening have been included in the line broadening.
