We present the analytical solution for a two-level system dressed by an intense laser field and discuss new phenomena arising under these conditions. We show that intense ultrashort laser pulses always break the symmetry of the two-level system, resulting in the generation of even-order harmonics of the incident light. Both the phase of the laser-induced polarization of the system and the emission spectrum can be controlled using experimentally accessible parameters. The control is sufficient to allow us to suppress odd and enhance even harmonics. We propose that phase control of nonlinear polarization can be used for quasi-phase matching of high-harmonic radiation.
Fedorov MV, Ivanov MY, 1993, Spontaneous Bremsstrahlung of an Electron in an Intense Laser Field: Classical vs. Quantum Approach, LASER PHYSICS, Vol: 3, Pages: 365-372, ISSN: 1054-660X
We consider the scattering of a classical electron in the presence of an intense laser field and the spectrum of the arising spontaneous emission. Our results are compared with analogous quantum-mechanical calculations. Although the quantum expressions contain the Planck constant only in the Coulomb logarithm, i.e., have a very weak dependence on (h) over bar, and although in a weak field quantum and classical mechanics yield the same result (except for the slightly different Coulomb logarithm), in the presence of a strong field the difference between classical and quantum results becomes significant. In our opinion, this difference is due to the difference in behavior of a completely localized classical and completely delocalized quantum electron scattered by the ion in the presence of the strong field.

We have experimentally determined the harmonic-generation cutoff as a function of the laser intensity in neon using an intense, short-pulse Ti:sapphire laser. The experimental cutoff is lower than that obtained in single-atom calculations. Using a simple quantum-mechanical approach to harmonic generation valid at high intensity, we show that the difference is due to the effect of propagation.
Ivanov MY, 1993, Trapping of Population at Rydberg States during Strong-Field Multiphoton Ionization, LASER PHYSICS, Vol: 3, Pages: 640-643, ISSN: 1054-660X
A new mechanism of atomic stabilization in the process of resonance ionization via Rydberg states is discussed. It is shown that strong resonance interaction of Rydberg states with a low lying state substantially suppresses ionization from this state and leads to the trapping of population at Rydberg states. Raman-type coupling of Rydberg states via continuum is shown to be essential for the effect even when bound-free interaction is weak.
IVANOV M, CORKUM P, 1993, GENERATION OF HIGH-ORDER HARMONICS FROM INERTIALLY CONFINED MOLECULAR-IONS, PHYSICAL REVIEW A, Vol: 48, Pages: 580-590, ISSN: 1050-2947
We consider the generation of high-order harmonics from inertially confined diatomic molecular ions driven by strong short pulses of laser radiation. Using a simple analytically solvable model, we show that diatomic molecular ions can be a very efficient source of high-order harmonics. The sources of the strong nonlinear response are charge-resonant states of odd-charge molecular ions. We also discuss possibilities for quasi-phase-matching, which are given by the molecular ions and which have no analogies in atomic systems.

It is known that a low-frequency light induces very efficient transitions between the continuous spectrum states of an atom. We show, however that these transitions are not effective sources of nonlinear optical processes, such as generation of higher harmonics of the low frequency light.

The effect of ionization suppression (stabilization) of an atom in the field of an intense lager pulse with smooth time envelope is considered using a simple model. The spectrum of complex quasi-energies, conditions for the appearance of narrow quasi-energy levels in an intense field, and physical mechanism of ionization suppression are analyzed. Exact analytical solutions are found for two different types of laser pulse shapes, and requirements for pulse parameters ensuring ionization suppression not only for short, but also for long pulses are formulated.

Resonant ionization of atoms in two fields - exciting (weak) and ionizing (strong), is considered under resonant conditions in the region of the Rydberg levels whose spectrum is restructured under the action of a strong ionizing field. The photoelectron energy spectrum and dispersion dependence of the ionization rate on the frequency of the exciting field are found. It is shown that under certain conditions the functions may have narrow minima in the vicinity of the electron energy and energy and exciting field frequency corresponding to the resonances on the quasi-energy atomic levels. The nature of the effect is elucidated and it is shown that it is due to interference between the direct resonant and cascade ionization processes. On this basis a physical interpretation of the stabilization of multiphoton ionization of atoms in the ground state located in a very strong laser field is presented. The case of short laser pulses with a smooth envelope and the specific features of the excitation and interference stabilization of the Rydberg levels which thus arise are considered.
