Weather markedly affects the perennation of plant pathogens and therefore the inoculum at the start of a vegetative season, an aspect infrequently included in disease management schemes. The fungi causing apple mildew and scab both perennate in the imperfect state and the effect of low temperature on the survival of mildew in dormant buds is demonstrated. With scab, the perfect state on Men leaves is an additional inoculum source; the effects of weather, from leaf‐fall to bud‐burst, on pseudothecial development and the ensuing epidemic are evaluated.
