Bock CH, Jeger MJ, 1999, The effect of sowing date on the incidence of sorghum downy mildew on sorghum in Zimbabwe, Tropical Science, Vol: 39, Pages: 194-203, ISSN: 0041-3291
The effect of date of sowing on the incidence of sorghum downy mildew (SDM), caused by Peronosclerospora sorghi, on sorghum was investigated by sowing three crops at 2-week intervals in two years. Later sowings did not significantly increase the incidence of systemic infection in either year. In 1992/93 the mean incidence of SDM infection was 2.9, 4.6 and 5.8% plants systemically infected for the first, second and third sowing dates respectively. In 1993/94 it was 14.7, 2.5 and 12.2%. Later sowing in 1992/93 reduced the yield, but drought masked any effect in 1993/94. Sowing in Zimbabwe, and much of semiarid Africa, is dependent on the arrival of the first rains, and it must be done expeditiously to utilize the short growing season.

JEGER MJ, CHAN MS, 1995, Theoretical aspects of epidemics: Uses of analytical models to make strategic management decisions, CAN J PLANT PATHOL, Vol: 17, Pages: 109-114
The uses of modelling in predicting and understanding plant disease epidemics have diversified and changed in emphasis in response to theoretical advances and in appreciation of practical constraints. A case is made in this paper for the relevance of theoretical models to strategic disease management decisions. Mathematical analysis of systems of equations describing different categories of disease (e.g. latent, infectious and post-infectious) allows predictions of the eventual size of an epidemic (e.g. final disease intensity), determination of criteria for an epidemic to occur, and the likely impact of a control practice on the epidemic. These ideas are illustrated with respect to theoretical models of plant virus disease epidemics subjected to management interventions involving: planting with isolation distances; and roguing of diseased plants with replanting of healthy ones. Conclusions are related to data obtained from the literature for four plant virus diseases, cocoa swollen shoot, plum pox, citrus tristeza, and banana bunchy top, although in each case the kinds and availability of epidemiological data may limit the uses of theoretical models.
