Summary

Michal Krzyzanowski is an environmental epidemiologist, holding honorary position of a Visiting Professor at the Environment Research Group at the School of Public Health of the Imperial College London. He is active as an expert consultant for WHO, UN Env and other organizations on health aspects of air pollution in Europe, Asia and Africa. He is a member of the WHO “Air pollution and health Scientific Advisory Group” as well as the WHO “Air Quality Guidelines Development Group”. He has coordinated organization and reporting from the WHO Global Platform on Air Quality and Health meetings (2014-2017) and contributes to the WHO program on capacity building in the assessment of health impacts of air pollution conducting regional and national training workshops on air quality and health (recently - in the Balkans, Caucasus, Iran, Pakistan and Africa). He is advising on the development of WHO health impact assessment tools (AirQ , HEAT). 

Until his retirement in 2012, he was a Head of the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health in Bonn, Germany. A part of his duties was organization of the global update of WHO Air Quality Guidelines as well as development of WHO guidelines on indoor air quality. In the period 2000-2012 he was also a chair of Joint Convention – WHO/ECEH Task Force on Health aspects of air pollution of the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution. He has managed WHO programs and projects on various aspects of environment and health, including regional assessments of environment and health situation prepared as a background of the ministerial conferences on environment and health. 

Before joining WHO in 1991, Dr Krzyzanowski conducted epidemiologic research on health effects of air pollution and other environmental factors in Poland, in the United States and in France. He is an author of more than 200 scientific publications and a recipient of the 2013 John R. Goldsmith Award from International Society for Environmental Epidemiology for his contributions to the knowledge and practice of environmental epidemiology. He holds MSc in Physics from Warsaw University and PhD as well as dr hab titles in Epidemiology from the National Institute of Hygiene, Warsaw, Poland.
