3-dimensionally ordered macroporous Cu and Ag were grown using electrodeposition coupled with a colloidal template. The films are homogenous and uniform over a large scale. Optical characterization has confirmed their three-dimensional periodicity and indicated the inverse structures have stop band properties in the visible wavelength range consistent with variation in the effective refractive index of the films. © The Electrochemical Society.

ZnO is known to produce a wide variety of nanostructures that have enormous scope for optoelectronic applications. Using an aqueous electrochemical deposition technique, we are able to tightly control a wide range of deposition parameters (Zn2 concentration, temperature, potential, time) and hence the resulting deposit morphology. By simultaneously conducting synchrotron x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) experiments during the deposition, we are able to directly monitor the growth rates of the nanostructures, as well as providing direct chemical speciation of the films. In Situ experiments such as these are critical to understanding the nucleation and growth of such nanostructures. Recent results from in Situ XAS synchrotron experiments demonstrate the growth rates as a function of potential and Zn2 concentration. These are compared with the electrochemical current density recorded during the deposition, and the final morphology revealed through ex Situ high resolution electron microscopy. The results are indicative of two distinct growth regimes, and simultaneous changes in the morphology are observed. These experiments are complemented by modelling the growth of the rods in the transport-limited case, using the Nernst-Planck equations in 2 dimensions, to yield the growth rate of the volume, length, and radius as a function of time. © 2007 Materials Research Society.

The corrosion behaviour of cast and heat-treated Al-6%Zn-1%Mg and Al-6%Zn-1%Mg-1%Ag alloys and metal matrix composites (MMCs) were investigated using dynamic polarisation techniques, followed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The addition of silver and the incorporation of continuous Altex fibres into the alloys have a positive effect on the materials' corrosion resistance. It was observed that due to the presence of second phase particles and microsegregation, pitting occurs preferentially at the grain boundary and fibre/matrix interface regions in the cast alloys and composites, respectively. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Atomistic modeling has been used to study the structure and transport properties of surface oxide films on pure iron. These calculations have been used to constrain parameters in the high-field model and diffusion-limited growth model for oxide growth kinetics. Only the Verwey high-field model is found to be consistent with the atomistic modeling, although consistency requires a large interstitial cation concentration. However, if cation transport is dominated by grain-boundary diffusion, the Mott-Cabrera high-field model can be reconciled with the atomistic modeling. Finally, we have considered models of grain ripening and examined the relationship between in-plane grain growth and out-of-plane thickening of the film. If grain ripening is occurring during film growth, then diffusion-limited growth is found to be consistent with empirical data.
