Summary

Mark Pesaresi joined the High Energy Physics group at Imperial as a research associate in 2009, after completing his PhD and undergraduate studies - also at Imperial.

Mark works on the CMS experiment at the LHC, specifically on detector R&D for the series of upgrades the experiment is implementing over the next 10 years.  His early research developed the concept of stacked tracking for the identification of high transverse momentum charged particles, applying this to simulations of an upgraded silicon tracker for CMS at the High Luminosity LHC.  This concept has now become an integral part of the baseline design for the tracker upgrade, due to start construction in the next few years.

His current research includes:

  • testing and prototyping of stacked silicon strip modules for the tracker upgrade, including the ASICs (CBC), developed at Imperial, that perform the high transverse momentum hit identification.
  • designing detector readout systems and electronics, including developing a multi-purpose and flexible MTCA processing card (FC7) in collaboration with CERN that is now in use within CMS as part of the timing/control sub-system (TCDS) and will be used as the off-detector control/DAQ electronics for the forthcoming Pixel Detector and HCAL upgrades.  The card also has applications outside of CMS, particularly in the CT-PPS, COMET and g-2 experiments.
  • steering an R&D project, from concept to hardware demonstration, of a system which makes use of the hits generated by stacked tracking modules from an upgraded tracker, performing fast and accurate track finding with them under realistic conditions, in order to enhance the trigger performance at Level 1.  A demonstrator slice is being assembled to prove this challenging concept, using hardware and approaches developed by Imperial for the CMS Level 1 Calorimeter Trigger.
  • thinking about the requirements and challenges on future off-detector electronics as the CMS-UK collaboration transitions from R&D to construction phases, with a view to providing common components including hardware, firmware and software, across the different projects the group is likely to contribute to.
  • operating a silicon strip beam telescope and DAQ, built by Imperial and based on CMS hardware, at CERN H8 for the study of silicon crystals with the ability to manipulate high energy, high intensity beams.  The crystals under test are being developed to collimate the LHC beam as the proton intensity increases, but could have applications to focus or even steer particle beams in future.
