Summary

Mike Brookes is a Senior Research Investigator in the Communications and Signal Processing group. After gaining a Mathematics degree from Cambridge, he spent four years at MIT and, later, the University of Hawaii working on the development of telescope systems and astronomical instrumentation. In 1975 he returned to the UK and joined the EEE Dept at Imperial College.

Mike's current research focuses on speech processing with an emphasis on hearing aid applications. He participates in the SOUNDS European Training Network which encompasses four universities along with eight non-academic partners and which aims to exploit network-enabled cooperation between audio devices. He is also part of the ELOSPHERES project which, in collaboration with the Dept of Speech Hearing and Phonetic Sciences, aims to maximise the intelligibility of speech to a hearing aid user in a particular acoustic  environment. Between 2007 and 2012, he was the Director of the Home Office sponsored Centre for Law Enforcement Audio Research (CLEAR) which investigated techniques for processing heavily corrupted speech signals.

Mike is not currently recruiting new postgraduate research students.
