Nasrin joined Imperial in December 2010 as a PhD student within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Her PhD was about investigating the influence of microstructure of SiC ceramic materials on the mechanical behavior at room temperature. She was the first to quantify slow crack growth of SiC at ambient conditions. Prior to her PhD, she worked in the Industry as R&D engineer. She obtained BSc. and MSc. in Aerospace Engineering from Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. After her PhD, she worked on the oxidation behavior of SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) and designing new environmental barrier coatings, a project funded by Rolls-Royce plc. Her novel coating based on rare earth monosilicates was recognized with the Gold Medal at STEM for Britain 2015, Engineering Section at the House of Common. She has been awarded with the Imperial College Junior Research fellowship in November 2016 for a funding of 3 years. In September 2018, she has started her Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship where she will be investigating the performance of ceramic composites and developing coating technologies for aerospace, energy and automotive sectors.
Nasrin is interested in developing new ceramic coating technologies that are cheaper, more durable and more environmental friendly for different engineering applications and investigating the full potential of ceramic matrix composites. She is currently working on the development of the next generation of engines that are lighter, faster, cheaper more efficient and less pollutants.
