Summary

Nick is an experimental psychologist with a PhD in behavioural decision science from UCL (2004), currently appointed Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery and Cancer and the Center for Patient Safety and Service Quality of Imperial College London, and Director of the ‘Non-Technical Skills and Simulation’ Research Group.

Nick is an expert in team assessment and training in healthcare – his research group is an international leader in the development of scientifically valid and clinically feasible assessment tools, methods, and training modules for healthcare teams in operating rooms, resuscitation, and cancer care settings – amongst others.

Tools developed by Nick’s group include the Observational Teamwork Assessment for Surgery (OTAS), the revised NOTECHS for operating room teams, the Observational Skill-based Clinical Assessment tool for Resuscitation (OSCAR) and the Multidisciplinary Team Metric for the Observation of Decision Making (MDT MODe) for multidisciplinary cancer teams/tumor boards.

Nick’s research has been disseminated in over 140 peer-reviewed publications and over 50 invited national and international lectures to date. Nick has has supervised to successful completion 5 doctoral fellows and he is currently supervising 9 doctoral candidates and 3 post-doctoral scientists.

Nick is an Associate Editor of Implementation Science and he is also serving on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Surgery, Simulation in Healthcare, the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, and the Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice.

He is also a member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group-Data Intelligence Group (UK), and the Association for Surgical Education Simulation, Membership, and Multi-institutional Surgical Education Research committees (USA).
