Maintenance policy optimization is concerned with determining when and to what extent major plant equipment items are to be taken off production for preventive maintenance. This paper considers the problem of determining optimal preventive maintenance policy parameters (e.g. effectiveness, frequency) for different items of equipment in multipurpose plants. Since preventive maintenance activities tend to be infrequent, a long-term view of the operation of the process must be taken. The procedure followed involves the formulation of a long-term combined production/maintenance aggregate planning problem, where the effect of failures on plant profitability are taken into account using the measure of expected resource availability as developed for continuous plants and modifying its use for applicability to the multipurpose mode of production. A variety of ways of formulating the problem as mixed integer non-linear or mixed integer linear programs are explored, and two examples are used to illustrate the ideas developed.

The design of controllers for processing systems has mostly concentrated on the purely continuous and purely discrete cases. However, most chemical processes exhibit hybrid characteristics. This work presents a model-based approach to the controller synthesis problem for hybrid processing systems. A parameterised representation for hybrid controllers is presented that generalises the purely discrete and purely continuous cases. A discrete/continuous mathematical model of the process and the control system is constructed. Then, the mathematical formulations of the control system design and performance verification problems are introduced. The former can be used to design a controller that behaves optimally with respect to a given finite set of disturbance scenarios. The latter, given a controller, determines: worst-case disturbance inputs that render the system infeasible or suboptimal. The two problems are finally combined into a two-stage, iterative design algorithm. A simple example is used to illustrate the potential of the proposed approach.

The first part of this paper presented an overall approach to optimization based design of biochemical processes. The procedure is divided into two stages. In the first stage (described in part I of this paper1), the processing rates and conditions of the unit operations and equipment capacities are determined through dynamic optimization, while simple scheduling considerations are accounted for. The second stage, described here, deals with detailed scheduling and design adjustments, required for an accurate determination of the sequence and timing of the unit operations, using the processing rates from the first stage. A scheduling model is developed to take account of batch integrity. The design procedure is demonstrated using an example of a process common in the biochemical industries.

The second stage deals with detailed scheduling and design adjustments, required for an accurate determination of the sequence and timing of the unit operations, using the processing rates from the first stage. A scheduling model is developed to take account of batch integrity and is described in the second part of this paper. The design procedure is demonstrated using an example of a process common in the biochemical industries. The production of an intra-cellular enzyme requires a fermentation stage (or stages) followed by a number of primary separation stages, with high resolution steps for final purification. In this example the process is considered up to and including the primary separation stages only. The process consists of nine stages including four typical unit operations.
