Layered transition metal oxide cathode materials can exhibit high energy densities in Li-ion batteries, in particular, those with high Ni contents such as LiNiO2. However, the stability of these Ni-rich materials often decreases with increased nickel content, leading to capacity fade and a decrease in the resulting electrochemical performance. Thin alumina coatings have the potential to improve the longevity of LiNiO2 cathodes by providing a protective interface to stabilize the cathode surface. The structures of alumina coatings and the chemistry of the coating-cathode interface are not fully understood and remain the subject of investigation. Greater structural understanding could help to minimize excess coating, maximize conductive pathways, and maintain high capacity and rate capability while improving capacity retention. Here, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, paired with powder X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy, is used to provide insight into the structures of the Al2O3 coatings on LiNiO2. To do this, we performed a systematic study as a function of coating thickness and used LiCoO2, a diamagnetic model, and the material of interest, LiNiO2. 27Al magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectra acquired for thick 10 wt % coatings on LiCoO2 and LiNiO2 suggest that in both cases, the coatings consist of disordered four- and six-coordinate Al-O environments. However, 27Al MAS NMR spectra acquired for thinner 0.2 wt % coatings on LiCoO2 identify additional phases believed to be LiCo1-xAlxO2 and LiAlO2 at the coating-cathode interface. 6,7Li MAS NMR and T1 measurements suggest that similar mixing takes place near the interface for Al2O3 on LiNiO2. Furthermore, reproducibility studies have been undertaken to investigate the effect of the coating method on the local structure, as well as the role of the substrate.

Energy storage devices, primarily lithium-ion batteries, power our electronic world. However, their growing usage may be constrained by raw material availability and cost. Sodium-ion batteries are a lower cost alternative to their lithium analogs, with readily available materials and lower raw material costs. This chapter highlights the current synthesis methods employed to produce the most representative negative and positive electrode materials which power sodium-ion batteries. In this chapter, the reader will appreciate the key synthesis parameters and properties which drive sodium-ion battery performance metrics of these materials.

Beth E. Murdock is a PhD student working across the Chemistry Department and Materials Science Institute at Lancaster University, under the supervision of Dr. Nuria Tapia-Ruiz and Dr. Kathryn Toghill. Her current research is focused on understanding the structure-property relationships in high-voltage substituted spinel cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries using X-ray and neutron diffraction techniques. Craig G. Armstrong joined Lancaster University in 2011 as an undergraduate student in natural sciences and later graduated in 2015 with a first-class MS degree with chemistry and physics study themes. He then began a PhD in chemistry at LU with Dr. Kathryn Toghill as her first doctoral student. In 2019 he was awarded his doctorate in electrochemistry regarding non-aqueous redox flow batteries with five original research articles. He then continued research with Dr. Kathryn Toghill as a postdoctoral researcher in carbon dioxide reduction, and after a decade at LU, he is now a postdoc at Swansea University. Daniel E. Smith is a recent PhD graduate from the University of Nottingham's School of Chemistry under the supervision of Dr. Darren A. Walsh. His PhD research concerned electrocatalytic reactions in ionic liquid electrolytes: specifically, the oxygen-reduction, hydrogen-oxidation, and formic acid-oxidation reactions. Published work contains fundamental insights into proton shuttling in protic ionic liquid electrolyte-based fuel cells. Daniel joins the group of Dr. Kathryn Toghill studying the electro-reduction of carbon dioxide on a European Research Council grant. In 2021, Daniel was awarded the Sir Fraser and Norma Stoddart Prize for Outstanding Citizenship and Academic Excellence in Postgraduate Research from the University of Nottingham School of Chemistry. Nuria Tapia-Ruiz obtained her PhD from the University of Glasgow in 2013. She then worked as a research fellow in the team of Prof. Bruce at the University of St. Andrews and the University of Oxford
