Nishel graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2003 and completed his postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2017. He is currently a Consultant Obstetrician at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust with a special interest in prematurity, diabetes, and infectious diseases. He completed his doctoral thesis titled ‘The in-vitro interrogation of the Immune System in Pregnancy’ with Imperial College London under the supervision of Professor Mark Johnson and was awarded a PhD in July 2017. His research work profiled the changes in maternal immune responses longitudinally with advancing pregnancy as well as during labour. He specifically investigated the effects of supplementary progesterone and RU486, which has progesterone antagonist functions, on these responses as immune-modulators, and, using influenza vaccine use in pregnancy as a model, antigen specific responses in pregnancy. This work underpins his current and published work. Through his research he has developed close links with the Centre of Immunology and Vaccinology, and the department of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London.

Most recently, he is principal investigator for ‘Evaluation of cell-mediated and humoral immunity following COVID-19 in pregnancy (ImmunoCOVID)’. His research is attempting to decipher how pregnancy influences the development and longevity of immunity to SARS-CoV-2 after infection and vaccination.
