Summary

Oliver Boughton is a Specialist Registrar in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery and Honorary Clinical Research Fellow. He qualified from St George's Hospital Medical School (MBBS) in 2010 and completed an Intercalated BSc in Anatomy. He developed an early interest in orthopaedic surgery from his BSc research project in hand surgery. His medical electives included hand surgery in the Anandwan Leprosy Colony in India, hand surgery at the Hand Clinic, Windsor, orthopaedic surgery at the National Spinal Unit in Dublin and sports orthopaedic surgery in Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, Canada. He is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS) and former NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow.

His PhD at Imperial College with Professor Justin Cobb focussed on how bone quality may be better assessed before and during orthopaedic operations and how this information could be used to optimise orthopaedic and trauma operations. He was awarded a Royal College of Surgeons and Dunhill Medical Trust Research Fellowship, as well as an NIHR ITMAT grant, to investigate the importance of bone quality in orthopaedic surgery.

He is an enthusiastic teacher and has a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare and Biomedical Education (PGCert HBE) from St George's, University of London. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Specialist Registrar in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery on the Irish Higher Surgical Training Programme.
