He worked in industry from 1979-1981 and then joined the Mechanical Engineering Department initially as a lecturer and then successively senior lecturer, reader and professor. He was Head of Department 2012-2019 and is now Associate Dean for Enterprise in the Faculty of Engineering. He formed and led the Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE) research group (www.imperial.ac.uk/nde) 1985-2020 and was also the principal investigator of the UK Research Centre for NDE (RCNDE) from its formation in 2003 to 2020. He has published over 220 refereed journal papers in this field.

Peter is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (elected in 2006) and of the Royal Society (elected 2010). He is a director a spin-out company set up in 1999 to exploit technology developed in his research group (Guided Ultrasonics Ltd www.guided-ultrasonics.com) and was chairman of another spin-out (Permasense Ltd www.permasense.com) until it was acquired by Emerson Inc in 2016. He was also a director of Integration Diagnostics Ltd, a spin-out company set up to exploit technology for monitoring the stability of dental implants that was developed in his lab, from 1999 until it was acquired by its Swedish investors in 2006 (now Osstell www.osstell.com).
