Peter Cawley received BSc and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from University of Bristol in 1975 and 1979 respectively. In 1986 he completed a Diploma with Distinction in Teaching and Course Development in Higher Education from the Institute of Education, University of London.
He worked in industry from 1979-1981 and then joined the Mechanical Engineering Department initially as a lecturer and then successively senior lecturer, reader and professor. He is now Head of Department and leads the Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE) research group (www.imperial.ac.uk/nde); he is also the principal investigator of the UK Research Centre for NDE (RCNDE) that has its head office at Imperial College. He has published over 190 refereed journal papers and a similar number of conference papers in this field and holds 4 current patents.
Peter is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (elected in 2006) and of the Royal Society (elected 2010). He is a director a spin-out company set up to exploit technology developed in his research group (Guided Ultrasonics Ltd www.guided-ultrasonics.com) and was chairman of a second spin-out (Permasense Ltd www.permasense.com) until it was acquired by Emerson Inc in 2016.
