Summary

Overview

Professor Cawley led the Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) research group (www.imperial.ac.uk/nde) from its formation in 1985 until 2020. He was the lead academic in the EPSRC-industry funded UK Research Centre in NDE (RCNDE) that had its headquarters at Imperial (www.rcnde.ac.uk) from 2003 until 2020.

The driving motivation of Professor Cawley's work is to solve real industrial inspection problems, achieved by conducting thorough scientific research. His work spans fundamental scientific studies through to the transfer of technology to industry.  He collaborates and consults with numerous industrial partners, and technology he has developed is now being exploited by three spin-out companies, Guided Ultrasonics Ltd (www.guided-ultrasonic.com), Permasense Ltd (www.permasense.com, acquired by Emeson inc in 2016) and Osstell (www.osstell.com, acquired by Swedish investors in 2006). He has also licenced fruit ripeness testing technology that was the first to enable supermarkets to sell ripe and ready to eat stoned fruit, and a dry coupled ultrasonic wheel probe enabling testing without a coupling fluid.
