Buzek V, Knight PL, Imoto N, 2000, Recycling of quantum information: Multiple observations of quantum clocks

How much information about the original state preparation can be extractedfrom a quantum system which already has been measured? That is, how manyindependent (non-communicating) observers can measure the quantum systemsequentially and give a nontrivial estimation of the original unknown state? Weinvestigate these questions and we show from a simple example that quantuminformation is not entirely lost as a result of the measurement-inducedcollapse of the quantum state, and that an infinite number of independentobservers who have no prior knowledge about the initial state can gain apartial information about the original preparation of the quantum system.

Beige A, Huelga SF, Knight PL, Plenio MB, Thompson RCet al., 2000, Coherent manipulation of two dipole-dipole interacting ions, Journal of Modern Optics, Vol: 47, Pages: 401-414, ISSN: 0950-0340

We investigate to what extent two trapped ions can be manipulated coherently when their coupling is mediated by adipole-dipole interaction. We will show how the resulting level shift induced by this interaction can be used to create entanglement, while the decay of the states remains nearly negligible. This will allow us to implement conditional dynamics (a CNOT gate) and single qubit operations. We propose two different experimental realizations where a large level shift can be achieved and discuss both the strengths and weaknesses of this scheme from the point of view of a practical realization. © 2000 Taylor & Francis Ltd.
