Kendall M, Tetley TD, Wigzell E, et al., 2002, Lung lining liquid modifies PM<inf>2.5</inf> in favor of particle aggregation: A protective mechanism, American Journal of Physiology - Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology, Vol: 282, ISSN: 1040-0605
The health effects of particle inhalation including urban air pollution and tobacco smoke comprise a significant public health concern worldwide, although the mechanisms by which inhaled particles cause premature deaths remain undetermined. In this study, we assessed the physicochemical interactions of fine airborne particles (PM2.5) and lung lining liquid using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photon spectroscopy. We provide experimental evidence to show that lung lining liquid modifies the chemistry and attractive forces at the surface of PM2.5, which leads to enhanced particle aggregation. We propose that this is an important protective mechanism that aids particle clearance in the lung.

Darowska HB, Adams MJ, Briscoe BJ, et al., 2000, Nanofriction of LB deposited phospholipid films, Tribology Series, Vol: 38, Pages: 203-213, ISSN: 0167-8922
An experimental study of boundary lubricants is described which is based on a surface force apparatus that had been modified to allow an oscillatory shear stress to be imposed. Phospholipid monolayers having different acyl chain lengths and a phospholipid bilayer were deposited onto the mica surfaces using the LB method at relatively high surface pressures in order to achieve close-packing. The storage moduli and loss tangents were measured as a function of the frequency and the contact pressure. They provide a means of monitoring the influence of the contact pressure on the molecular organisation of the lipid layers and also an understanding of the influence of this organisation on the sliding frictional characteristics of the layers. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Staeritz KU, Briscoe BJ, Luckham PF, 2000, Gel forming behaviour of milk protein concentrates at moderate pressures, High Pressure Research, Vol: 19, Pages: 55-60, ISSN: 0895-7959
Gel formation is a time dependent process, which is a function of many external variables. Here we report the effect of pressure on the gelation of certain milk proteins. It is found that hydrostatic pressure (1000 bar) decreases the gelation time of concentrated reconstituted milk (13%w/w protein) at around 50°C by more than sevenfold.
