Summary
I am an Academic Neurologist based in the Division of Neurology and Honorary Consultant at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. My undergraduate training was in Oxford, and I subsequently carried out a PhD with Professor Masud Husain at Imperial and the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience. Following this I completed Specialist Training and a NIHR Clinical Lectureship in London, before a Visiting Scholarship to Sydney, with Professor Simon Lewis and Professor John Hodges.
My work focusses on the cognitive deficits that are caused by Neurological conditions such as stroke and neurodegenerative disease, and developing treatments for these disorders. In particular, I am interested in disorders of attention and memory, and the use of imaging techniques to understand how they are caused. The aim of understanding these problems is to improve therapeutic effectiveness and I am actively involved in the development and assessment of novel treatments. I have carried out a number of drug trials in stroke patients with impaired attention, and am the lead investigator for a NIHR-funded treatment trial for Alzheimer's Disease. In addition, I am examining how novel therapies, such as brain stimulation, can improve attention after stroke.
I am involved in a number of collaborations, both within and outside Imperial College-these include studies examining the links between hearing loss and dementia and UK-wide studies assessing multiple biomarkers in the earliest stages of Alzheimer's Disease. In addition, I am an Associate Member of the UK Dementia Research Institute, based at the Care Research and Technology Centre, and am also part of the ACORD collaboration.
I have appeared on Sky News, ITV News and BBC World to discuss recent developments in the field of dementia, as well as a short film for the Guardian describing the spatial neglect syndrome (a common disorder which follows stroke). Work that I have led or been involved in has been reported in The Times, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph and wider international press.
Current and recent support for my research has come from the Alzheimer's Society, the National Institute of Health Research, the Medical Research Council, and the Biomedical Research Centre at Imperial College.
