Summary
Paolo Paredi is a Clinical Research Fellow at the National Heart and Lung Institute and Honorary Consultant Physician at Royal Brompton Hospital, London.
He qualified at Milan University (first class honours) and was appointed to his present post in London in 1995 after being awarded a culsultat post in Italy. He has published over 50 peer-review papers on asthma, COPD and related topics and has written a number of book chapters. His manuscripts have been cited over 2000 times (h-index = 19). He also serves on the Editorial Board of a number of journals. He has given several lectures, and is a regular invited speaker at international meetings and at courses organised by the European Respiratory Society. He has supervised a number of students who have successfully completed their higher degrees studies at Imperial College.
His research is focused on non-invasive assessment of airway inflammation using exhaled breath analysis. His pioneering studies have introduced for the first time the use of exhaled breath temperature to monitor airway inflammation. In addition, he has developed a portable system to collect exhaled breath and measure exhaled gasses offline, this new technique is now aknowlwedged in the American Thoracic Society guidelines.
More recently he has devised a completely new technique to partition peripheral and central airway nitric oxide allowing the study of different parts of the respiratory system with two simple breaths. Dr Paredi has also made groundbreaking discoveries in the use of impulse oscillometry as a method to study small airway disease.
