Lei DY, Kéna-Cohen S, Zou B, et al., 2012, Spectroscopic ellipsometry as an optical probe of strain evolution in ferroelectric thin films, Opt. Express, Vol: 20, Pages: 4419-4427
Heteroepitaxial strain in ferroelectric thin films is known to have a significant impact on both their low and high frequency dielectric properties. In this paper, we use ex-situ spectroscopic ellipsometry to study the strain evolution with film thickness, and strain relaxation in ferroelectric Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 epitaxial films grown on single crystal substrates. For films grown on MgO substrates, a critical thickness for strain relaxation is observed. In addition, studies of Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 films grown on different single crystal substrates reveal that the strain relaxation rate can be inferred from changes in the optical properties. Using this information, we show that the optical constants of Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 can be readily tuned via strain engineering.

Franklin JB, Zou B, Petrov P, et al., 2011, Optimised Pulsed Laser Deposition of ZnO Thin Films on Transparent Conducting Substrates, Journal of Materials Chemistry, Vol: 21, Pages: 8178-8182
The growth of polycrystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on indium tin oxide (ITO) is reported. For the first time the influence of deposition temperature over an extended range (50 - 650 °C) is investigated on ITO. We describe the role of temperature on the optical and crystalline properties of the deposited films, of 120-250 nm thickness. Additionally, the effect of the background oxygen pressure is reported. Under all of the deposition conditions highly textured c-axis oriented ZnO, transparent (> 85%) and low roughness (RMS < 10 nm) films are formed. Growth temperatures ≥ 450 ˚C lead to the highest degree of crystallinity and film quality with measured full width half maximum (FWHM) of X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks as small as 0.14 ˚2θ. XRD measurements of films grown at < 350 °C show a shift in the (002) diffraction peak to lower 2θ values, indicating that the deposited films are oxygen deficient. Increasing the oxygen pressure results in the preparation of stoichiometric films at temperatures as low as 50 °C. We demonstrate that in addition to forming high quality ZnO, the optical and electronic properties of ITO can be preserved, even at high temperature, presenting a methodology for preparing highly crystalline ZnO on ITO over a temperature window significantly larger than that of previous literature reports. Furthermore, the low temperature processing opens up the possibility of deposition on a wide range of substrates, especially those unsuitable for exposure to high temperatures.

Buslov OY, Keys VN, Kozyrev AB, et al., 2008, Band-pass tunable filter based on planar dielectric resonators, Pages: 513-514
An X-band 2-pole filter based on uniplanar dielectric resonators (PDR) with ferroelectric tuning was designed and fabricated. PDR's were chosen because of their high Q-factor and the rarefied spectrum of resonance mode frequencies. At frequency ~10.5GHz the filter displayed insertion losses not more than S 21=-3dB in the bandwidth Δf=110MHz. The frequency of tuning was ΔF=420MHz. © 2008: CriMiCo'2008 Organizing Committee.

An X-band 2-pole filter based on uniplanar dielectric resonators (UPDR) with ferroelectric tuning was designed and fabricated. UPDRs were chosen because of their high Q-factor, the rarefied spectrum of resonance mode frequencies, simplicity of manufacture and the convenience for integrating a ferroelectric tuning varactor. The analytical description of the filter response is presented and good agreement between simulated and measured experimental data is demonstrated. At a frequency of ∼ 10.5 GHz the filter displayed insertion losses not more than S21 = -3.5 dB in the bandwidth Δf ∼ 110 MHz. The frequency of tuning was ΔF ∼ 420 MHz. © 2008 EuMA.

It is important to be able to accurately evaluate the electrical properties of dielectric materials to enable the accurate design of passive microwave integrated circuit components. This paper reports on research that has been undertaken in this area at London South Bank University. Three measurement techniques are reported. The first is a novel technique for measuring dielectric materials with a large tan δ using a composite resonator. The second is the measurement of the permittivity of ferroelectric thin films using a planar capacitor. The third is the use of an evanescent microwave probe to find the electrical properties at the surface of a sample.
