Summary
Dr. Pedro Nakasu received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering (2019) at State University of Campinas. His Ph.D research, which was also done partly at Imperial College London (2017), investigated sugarcane bagasse pretreatment with ionic liquids for 2nd generation ethanol. He joined Imperial College as a research assistant in 2021. His current work entails plant biomass fractionation to generate high-purity lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose for further transformation into value-added products. He also investigates shellfish fractionation into chitosan and proteins for applications in biorefinery.
Research interests
Dr. Nakasu's research interests include:
- Lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment/fractionation for an integrated biorefinery approach, specifically with ionic liquids.
- Chitin and chitosan production from shellfish waste.
- Development and optimization of pretreatment processes.
- Enzymatic hydrolysis of biomass and alcoholic fermentation of hydrolysates.
- Protein extraction from lignocellulosic biomass
