Pilot Plant Project - CENG95007
The aim of the carbon capture pilot plant project is for students to acquire practical, “hands-on”, experience of many of the key aspects of design and operation of a large scale process plant controlled using a full industrial control system.
Specifically, students consider a 500 te/yr carbon capture process for reversible chemical absorption of CO2 from a mixture of gases using a 15% MEA (Monoethanolamine) solution. During their coursework students progress from conceptual design considerations through to mechanical design and control and instrumentation understanding and then practice commissioning skills and operational procedures whilst operating under a simple Permit to Work scheme.
Membrane Science and Membrane Separation Processes - CENG97014
The aim of this class is to develop the student's ability to formulate and solve engineering problems involving design of membranes and membrane modules for gas separation, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, dialysis, pervaporation, gas absoprtion/stripping, etc..
Advanced Chemical Engineering Design Practice Final Year Design - CENG97006
The Design Project has the objective of giving students experience of advanced design practice by carrying out a complex design task in as realistic a way as possible. The desired learning outcomes include producing a comprehensive design in response to an open-ended brief, while working in a large team, under realistic time pressure and on the basis of limited information.
The main aims of the Design Project are to help students:
• develop skills in complex design problem-solving including technical, safety, environmental and economic aspects
• develop skills in the effective management of work and decision making in large groups
• develop skills in the presentation (oral and written) of complex techno-economic results
