Summary

Rupert J. Myers is Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Materials Engineering at Imperial College London.

He has worked across various engineering/science disciplines and locations, from Australia (Uni. of Melbourne), to the United States (UC Berkeley, Yale, MIT), and to Europe (EMPA, Uni. of Edinburgh, ICL).

Rupert's research and teaching focuses on driving reductions in environmental impacts and the development of sustainable engineering practice. He specifically targets construction materials that are hugely important to society, notably cementitious materials (cement, concrete, etc.), and the services/products that they provide, e.g., shelter/buildings, infrastructure, and cities.

Outstanding prospective PhD students and postdocs that are passionate about sustainability, science/engineering, and materials are encouraged to get in touch by email with their CV attached. PhD projects are continually available, on topics shown here and listed below:

  • Modelling use of materials and energy throughout society and related scenario/policy analysis, e.g., to identify environmentally beneficial technologies (industrial ecology, data engineering)
  • Using thermodynamics to fundamentally understand environmentally beneficial/harmful materials, e.g., properties of cement binders with low CO2 emissions, persistence of toxic chemicals (materials science, chemistry)
  • Assessment and characterisation of natural and anthropogenic resources for environmentally beneficial use, e.g., industrial by-products (industrial ecology, materials science)

Rupert is available for consultancy and public/media engagement on the topics above and related areas, such as industrial decarbonisation, circular economy, resource efficiency, sustainable construction, novel construction materials, low carbon cement and concrete, life cycle assessment, material flow analysis, etc.
