Segal DM, Vogel M, Thompson RC, Bharadia Set al., 2012, Dynamics of laser-cooled Ca+ ions in a Penning trap with a rotating wall, Applied Physics B: lasers and optics

We have performed systematic measurements of the dynamics of laser-cooled 40Ca+ ions confined in a Penning trap and driven by a rotating dipole field (‘rotating wall’). The trap used is a copy of the one used in the SPECTRAP experiment located at the HITRAP facility at GSI, Germany. The size and shape of the ion cloud has been monitored using a CCD camera to image the fluorescence light resulting from excitation by the cooling laser. We have varied the experimental conditions such as amplitude and frequency of the rotating wall drive as well as the trapping parameters. The rotating wall can be used for a radial compression of the ion cloud thus increasing the ion density in the trap. We have also observed plasma mode excitations in agreement with theoretical expectations. This work will allow us to define the optimum parameters for high compression of the ions as needed for precision spectroscopy of forbidden transitions.

HITRAP is a facility for very slow highly-charged heavy ions at GSI. HITRAP uses the GSI relativistic ion beams, the Experimental Storage Ring ESR for electron cooling and deceleration to 4 MeV/u, and consists of a combination of an interdigital H-mode (IH) structure with a radiofrequency quadrupole structure for further deceleration to 6 keV/u, and a Penning trap for accumulation and cooling to low temperatures. Finally, ion beams with low emittance will be delivered to a large variety of atomic and nuclear physics experiments. Presently, HITRAP is in the commissioning phase. The deceleration of heavy-ion beam from the ESR storage ring to an energy of 500 keV/u with the IH structure has been demonstrated and studied in detail. The commissioning of the RFQ structure and the cooler trap is ongoing.

Earis A, Daley M, Fei S, Thompson RCet al., 2007, Acoustical Studies of Historical Keyboard Instruments in the Royal College of Music Museum of Instruments, 19th International Congress on Acoustics (ICA 2007), Publisher: Sociedad Espanola de Acustica, Pages: 1759-1764

Inharmonicity occurs in stiff strings where the frequencies of the individual partials do not correspond precisely to the expected integer multiples of the fundamental frequency. This ‘stretching’ of the harmonic frequencies increases with string stiffness, and can be measured by means of an inharmonicity coefficient, B. This paper investigates the effect of inharmonicity in the strings of three historical keyboard instruments in the Royal College of Music (RCM) Museum of Instruments, a Kirckman harpsichord (1773) and grand pianos by Broadwood (1799) and Bertsche (1821).For each instrument, the frequencies of the individual partials of each string were determined experimentally by recording and analysis using an algorithm employing the fast Fourier transform. The experimentally measured values of B were then compared with those calculated theoretically using the known physical parameters of the string. The theoretical and experimental data correlate well and any differences between the two can be attributed to the lack of reliable partial data for higher pitch strings. The value of B shows a systematic dependence on the date of construction with the more recent instruments having higher values. This behaviour can be related to developments in the structure of the instrument.
