An ion trapping and laser cooling system suitable for magnesium ions has been constructed. The system consists of a Penning ion trap contained within an all-metal vacuum system maintained below 3 × 10-19 mbar. Cooling to temperatures of <1 K has been achieved for a large cloud of ions. Single magnesium ions have been trapped and cooled, and quantum jumps have been observed. Quantum jumps in the odd isotope of magnesium (25Mg+) have been simulated. Preliminary results suggest that as well as quantum jumps between the two levels equivalent to the 24Mg+, there are two further types of quantum jump. From experimental observations of 25Mg+ in the trap, the pumping rates between different hyperfine levels due to the laser can be determined and compared with both the predictions of the model and the results for 25Mg+.

Gill P, Thompson RC, 1987, The preparation and analysis of iodine cells, Metrologia, Vol: 23, Pages: 161-166, ISSN: 0026-1394

The procedure used at NPL for the routine filling of iodine cells is described, along with standard methods employed for the verification of the cells. Results show that a small proportion of the cells filled have significant contamination present. Detailed spectral analysis of these cells identifies the contaminants as primarily N2 and CO. It is also shown that contaminated cells can be temporarily improved by an extended period of radio-frequency discharge.
