Richard's research interests span several public health policy areas including the application of 'big data' and health services research. He is particularly interested in translational population health research, joining up academic thinking with public health practice. His recent research areas involve the impact of licensing policy on alcohol morbidity and prescription drug misuse. 

His previous research has involved collaboration with the King's Centre for Military Health Research, UK Ministry of Defence, US Department of Defense, Dr Foster Unit at Imperial College and work with health services researchers at King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre.
