I am Consultant & Honorary Senior Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital and Imperial College London, and Clinical Director of the NationaI Institute of Health Research (NIHR) London North West Clinical Research Network.

My clinical and research interests include air travel in lung disease; and interstitial lung disease and sarcoidosis.

I helped establish the British Thoracic Society (BTS) Air Travel Working Party in 2000, and chaired it until 2011. In 2018 I was appointed Chair of the new BTS Air Travel Committee. In 2019 I was honoured to be awarded the 2019 Bronze Medal from the Royal Aeronautical Society, in recognition of my work developing recommendations to improve safety for passengers with lung disease undertaking commercial air travel. Publication of the BTS Clinical Statement, ‘Air Travel and Respiratory Disease’, is expected in 2021.

I have a large clinical cohort of patients with interstitial lung disease, including sarcoidosis, CT-ILD, and IPF. The service is commissioned by NHS England and has European Reference Network accreditation. In 2013 I helped establish the British Thoracic Society (BTS) Interstitial Lung Disease Registry. The Registry aims to improve clinical care for patients with sarcoidosis and IPF, and now holds data from over 60 UK centres, including over 2,700 IPF and over 500 sarcoid patient records.
