AB - Here,wedemonstrate thatlightandoxygen-induceddegradationis themain reason forthelowoperationalstability ofmethylammoniumlead triiodide (MeNH3PbI3) perovskitesolar cells exposed to ambient conditions. When exposed to both light and dry air,unencapsulatedMeNH3PbI3 solarcellsrapidlydegradeontimescalesofminutestoa fewhours. Thisrapiddegradationisalsoobservedunderelectricallybias driven currentflowinthedarkin thepresenceofO2. In contrast, significantly slowerdegradationisobservedwhentheMeNH3PbI3 devicesareexposedtomoisturealone(e.g.85%relativehumidityinN2). Weshowthatthislightandoxygeninduceddegradationcanbesloweddownbytheuseofinterlayersthatareabletoremoveelectronsfromtheperovskitefilmbeforetheycan reactwithoxygen to formO2-.Theseobservationsdemonstrate that theoperationalstability of electronic and optoelectronic devices that exploit the electron transportingproperties of MeNH3PbI3 will be critically dependent upon the use of suitable barrierlayers and device configurations to mitigate the oxygen sensitivity of this remarkablematerial.
