Summary
After qualifying in medicine in 1991 from the University of Birmingham (UK), Shamini went on to complete specialist training in general practice in the North East of Engalnd. From1995 to 1996, she worked as a GP in London and then went on to work as medic for VSO in Tanzania. It was this experience that sparked her interest in public health and she went on to complete her specialist training in public health medicine in 2003. She remains dually accredited in both specialties.
As a consultant in public health medicine, working in primary care organisations and health authorities she covered a wide range of portfolios from healthcare commissioning to quality improvement of services, setting up stop smoking services and evalauting screenign programmes.
She has been at Imperial since 2006 and has undertaken roles that have included being the joint medical Director for Partnership for Health, a collaboration which set up urgent care centres and a GP practice at Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals.
Her research interests are in primary care, mental health, urgent care, quality improvement and health inequalities at a national and international level. She has developed a distance learning Masters in Public Health programme with Open University of Mauritius. She is presently Imperial College’s NIHR School of Public Health's lead for public mental health and NIHR CRN specialty lead for health services research in North West London.
