We review some recent applications of changes of coordinate systems applied to the design of a novel class of metamaterials: invisibility cloaks, rotators and concentrators. These heterogeneous anisotropic media allow for a markedly enhanced control of the electromagnetic waves.

Transformational optics and metamaterials allow for a markedly enhanced control of electromagnetic waves, with fascinating applications ranging from perfect lenses to invisibility cloaks, carpets, concentrators and rotators. Here, we present a review of curved anisotropic heterogeneous metasurfaces designed using the tool of transformational plasmonics in order to achieve a similar control for Ssurface Plasmon Polaritons. © 2011 EurAAP.

Brun M, Guenneau S, Movchan AB, 2010, An elastic cloak model based on coordinate transformation, Pages: 355-359
We propose a class of cylindrical cloaks for elastic waves which are deduced from geometric transform. In particular we implement a radially symmetric linear geometric transform which depends upon a parameter and depending upon the value of such parameter, the transform is applied to the design of neutral (invisibility) cloaks and to obtain mirage effects. Interestingly, the cloaking device has been designed for fully-coupled in-plane shear and pressure waves and, moreover, the chosen reparameterization is such that the elasticity equations maintain their initial form under the transformation, which is generally untrue in the elasticity case. This paper is a review of various techniques used in computational electromagnetism such as the treatment of leaky modes in waveguides, helicoidal geometries for microstructured optical fibres and the design of arbitrarily shaped invisibility cloaks. This seemingly heterogeneous list is unified by the concept of geometrical transformation that leads to equivalent materials, i.e., the change of coordinates is completely encapsulated in the material properties. The practical set up is conveniently made via the finite element method (FEM). © 2009 Springer Netherlands.
