AB - Stem cells have emerged as a justifiable and promising medical therapy for patients with heart failure. Many cell types have been contemplated during the past years, and there is promising preclinical and clinical data on their efficacy and safety in the setting of acute myocardial infarction and chronic heart failure. However, there are still many hurdles to be overcome for the routine clinical application of these cells. In current preclinical models, small molecules, epigenetic modifications, tissue engineering and gene modifications are being used to treat a diverse array of diseases. A better understanding of the biology of stem cell-derived cardiovascular cells and their application will help in the design of future strategies for functional cardiac regeneration.
