Summary

Stephen is a Principal Teaching Fellow in the Dyson School of Design Engineering with 30 plus years experience in design consultancy and higher education.  He is Head of the Innovation Design Engineering programme jointly run between Imperial College and the Royal College of Art.  He is Academic Tutor within the School and leads a number of modules on the Design Engineering MEng programme and also contributes to the Global Innovation Design programme He is an elected Board Member of the British Industrial Design Association and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

As a design consultant, Stephen was part of the team designing and obtaining worldwide patents for the World’s first large scale production of injection moulded suitcases for Samsonite, which have subsequently sold in millions. Other experience covers work in a diverse range of industry sectors resulting in a number of award winning design projects: The British Design Award in 1993 for computer products, a Designers and Art Directors Silver award in 1998 for a range of Suitcases and a Business Week award in 2002 for public conveniences.  More recently Stephen was a Client Director at Fitch, part of the WPP group and one of the largest global design consultancies.  Clients here included TfL, Diagio, Westminster City Council, Liverpool City Council and West London Business.

Work within Higher education includes 6 years leading the 3D Design programmes at the highly respected Ravensbourne College.  Prior to joining Imperial College, Stephen was Director of Teaching and Learning for undergraduate and postgraduate design at Brunel University. Other academic roles during his 12 years at Brunel included being Director of the MSc Integrated Product Design Programme.  Throughout his career Stephen has placed considerable emphasis on the benefits of close collaboration between industry and universities.  At Brunel and Ravensbourne he has led many collaborative projects including work with the BBC, Nokia,Mitsubishi, Kodak, the Tate Modern, Marks and Spencer, Jaguar Landrover, BT, Sony and many others.  At Brunel Stephen established and led the Co-Innovate initiative, a multi-million pound programme, co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund to set up links between companies in the London region with the research and practical resources available within Brunel University London.

Stephen is also active in design research, working on research funded by AHRC, EPSRC and JISC on projects involved with exploiting the value of design through emerging professional practice.  In particular, open and collaborative design, design led innovation and methodologies for better understanding of design impact.
