Sanzari I, Humphrey EJ, Dinelli F, et al., 2018, Effect of patterned polyacrylamide hydrogel on morphology and orientation of cultured NRVMs, Scientific Reports, Vol: 8, ISSN: 2045-2322
We recently demonstrated that patterned Parylene C films could be effectively used as a mask for directly copolymerizing proteins on polyacrylamide hydrogel (PAm). In this work, we have proved the applicability of this technique for studying the effect such platforms render on neonatal rat ventricular myocytes (NRVMs). Firstly, we have characterised topographically and mechanically the scaffolds in liquid at the nano-scale level. We thus establish that such platforms have physical properties that closely mimics the in vivo extracellular environment of cells. We have then studied the cell morphology and physiology by comparing cultures on flat uniformly-covered and collagen-patterned scaffolds. We show that micro-patterns promote the elongation of cells along the principal axis of the ridges coated with collagen. In several cases, cells also tend to create bridges across the grooves. We have finally studied cell contraction, monitoring Ca2+ cycling at a certain stimulation. Cells seeded on patterned scaffolds present significant responses in comparison to the isotropic ones.

Messaris I, Nikolaidis S, Serb A, et al., 2017, Live demonstrateon: A TiO<inf>2</inf> ReRAM parameter extraction method, ISSN: 0271-4310
We demonstrate a desktop platform which has the ability of modeling ReRAM TiO2 samples in a highly automated manner. The system consists of a bespoke RRAM characterization instrument that hosts packaged RRAM devices and is operated via a PC. The system's python-based software includes a module that automatically applies strategically chosen sequences of pulses to a test device and then extracts the suitable parameter values for a resistive switching model from the elicited response.

Evans D, Papadimitriou KI, Greathead L, et al., 2017, An Assay System for Point-of-Care Diagnosis of Tuberculosis using Commercially Manufactured PCB Technology, SCIENTIFIC REPORTS, Vol: 7, ISSN: 2045-2322
Rapid advances in clinical technologies, detection sensitivity and analytical throughput have delivered a significant expansion in our knowledge of prognostic and diagnostic biomarkers in many common infectious diseases, such as Tuberculosis (TB). During the last decade, a significant number of approaches to TB diagnosis have been attempted at Point-of-Care (PoC), exploiting a large variation of techniques and materials. In this work, we describe an electronics-based Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (eELISA), using a Lab-on-a-Printed Circuit Board (LoPCB) approach, for TB diagnosis based on cytokine detection. The test relies upon an electrochemical (amperometric) assay, comprising a high-precision bioinstrumentation board and amperometric sensors, produced exclusively using standard PCB manufacturing processes. Electrochemical detection uses standard Au and Ag electrodes together with a bespoke, low-power, multichannel, portable data-acquisition system. We demonstrate high-performance assay chemistry performed at microfluidic volumes on Au pads directly at the PCB surface with improved limit of detection (~10 pg/mL) over standard colorimetric ELISA methods. The assay has also been implemented in plasma, showing the utility of the system for medical applications. This work is a significant step towards the development of a low-cost, portable, high-precision diagnostic and monitoring technology, which once combined with appropriate PCB-based microfluidic networks will provide complete LoPCB platforms.
