Summary
I have worked in the Department of Primary Care and Public Health since 2008 but moved to a new position as Primary Care Executive Officer in October 2018. It is a multi-faceted role incorporating the co-ordination of teaching in the department and activities within the team including meetings, conferences and research planning.
I am involved in a number of courses and initiatives, such as Widening Access to Careers in Community Health Care (WATCCH) which supports students from state schools with an interest in careers in healthcare and who may have not had the opportunity to access work experience.
I plan the activities of students on the Medical Education course. The students observe teaching sessions in the department and go on to teach them, making the transformation from student to educator over the course of a 3-week placement.
I also have a role as an academic tutor for year 3 students on their Community Action Project. A key component of the Medicine in the Community Apprenticeship, CAP provides an opportunity for our students to engage with the local communities in which they are placed, understand local needs and make a positive difference to improve community health and well-being.
In my work I highly value the key priorities of the department: patient-centred approaches to teaching, a strong focus on social accountability, longitudinal learning and developments in digital pedagogy. I am always seeking to find innovative ways of improving interactions between doctors, students and community members and I have a keen interest in the role art, literature and philosophy has to play in medical education.
I am co-chair of an educational Community of Practice, a diverse group of students, clinicians and administrators who meet to share ideas that extend beyond the everyday and explore creative and mindful approaches to work.
I also edit and maintain the department blog, which you can read here: https://wwwf.imperial.ac.uk/blog/gp-teaching/
