A search is presented for a heavy vector-like quark, decaying into a b quark and a W boson, which is produced singly in association with a light flavor quark and a b quark. The analysis is performed using a data sample of proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of collected at the LHC in 2015. The data set used in the analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3. The search is carried out using events containing one electron or muon, at least one b-tagged jet with large transverse momentum, at least one jet in the forward region of the detector, and missing transverse momentum. No excess over the standard model prediction is observed. Upper limits are placed on the production cross section of heavy exotic quarks: a T quark with a charge of 2/3, and a Y quark with a charge of . For Y quarks with coupling of 0.5 and , the observed (expected) lower mass limits are 1.40 (1.0). This is the most stringent limit to date on the single production of the Y vector-like quark.

The first measurement of the jet mass mjetmjet of top quark jets produced in tt¯tt¯ events from pp collisions at s√=8s=8 TeVTeV is reported for the jet with the largest transverse momentum pTpT in highly boosted hadronic top quark decays. The data sample, collected with the CMS detector, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1fb−1 . The measurement is performed in the lepton+jets channel in which the products of the semileptonic decay t→bWt→bW with W→ℓνW→ℓν where ℓℓ is an electron or muon, are used to select tt¯tt¯ events with large Lorentz boosts. The products of the fully hadronic decay t→bWt→bW with W→qq¯¯¯′W→qq¯′ are reconstructed using a single Cambridge–Aachen jet with distance parameter R=1.2R=1.2 , and pT>400pT>400 GeVGeV . The tt¯tt¯ cross section as a function of mjetmjet is unfolded at the particle level and is used to test the modelling of highly boosted top quark production. The peak position of the mjetmjet distribution is sensitive to the top quark mass mtmt , and the data are used to extract a value of mtmt to assess this sensitivity.

Normalized double-differential cross sections for top quark pair (\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}) production are measured in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8\,\text {TeV} with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7\,\text {fb}^{-1}. The measurement is performed in the dilepton \mathrm {e}^{\pm }\mu ^{\mp } final state. The \mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}} cross section is determined as a function of various pairs of observables characterizing the kinematics of the top quark and \mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}} system. The data are compared to calculations using perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading and approximate next-to-next-to-leading orders. They are also compared to predictions of Monte Carlo event generators that complement fixed-order computations with parton showers, hadronization, and multiple-parton interactions. Overall agreement is observed with the predictions, which is improved when the latest global sets of proton parton distribution functions are used. The inclusion of the measured \mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}} cross sections in a fit of parametrized parton distribution functions is shown to have significant impact on the gluon distribution.

The cross section for coherent photoproduction accompanied by at least one neutron on one side of the interaction point and no neutron activity on the other side, , is measured with the CMS experiment in ultra-peripheral PbPb collisions at . The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 159, collected during the 2011 PbPb run. The mesons are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel, while neutrons are detected using zero degree calorimeters. The measured cross section is in the rapidity interval . Using a model for the relative rate of coherent photoproduction processes, this measurement gives a total coherent photoproduction cross section of . The data strongly disfavor the impulse approximation model prediction, indicating that nuclear effects are needed to describe coherent photoproduction in interactions. The data are found to be consistent with the leading twist approximation, which includes nuclear gluon shadowing.

A search is presented for extra spatial dimensions, quantum black holes, andquark contact interactions in measurements of dijet angular distributions in proton-protoncollisions at √s = 13 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHCand correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2.6 fb−1. The distributions are found tobe in agreement with predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics that includeelectroweak corrections. Limits for different contact interaction models are obtained. In a benchmark model, valid to next-to-leading order in QCD and in which only lefthandedquarks participate, quark contact interactions are excluded up to a scale of 11.5and 14.7 TeV for destructive or constructive interference, respectively. The productionof quantum black holes is excluded for masses below 7.8 or 5.3 TeV, depending on themodel. The lower limits for the scales of virtual graviton exchange in the Arkani-HamedDimopoulos-Dvalimodel of extra spatial dimensions are in the range 7.9–11.2 TeV, and arethe most stringent set of limits available.

A search for dark matter particles is performed using events with large missing transverse momentum, at least one energetic jet, and no leptons, in proton-proton collisions at s√=13s=13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 12.9 fb−1. The search includes events with jets from the hadronic decays of a W or Z boson. The data are found to be in agreement with the predicted background contributions from standard model processes. The results are presented in terms of simplified models in which dark matter particles are produced through interactions involving a vector, axial-vector, scalar, or pseudoscalar mediator. Vector and axial-vector mediator particles with masses up to 1.95 TeV, and scalar and pseudoscalar mediator particles with masses up to 100 and 430 GeV respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level. The results are also interpreted in terms of the invisible decays of the Higgs boson, yielding an observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limit of 0.44 (0.56) on the corresponding branching fraction. The results of this search provide the strongest constraints on the dark matter pair production cross section through vector and axial-vector mediators at a particle collider. When compared to the direct detection experiments, the limits obtained from this search provide stronger constraints for dark matter masses less than 5, 9, and 550 GeV, assuming vector, scalar, and axial-vector mediators, respectively. The search yields stronger constraints for dark matter masses less than 200 GeV, assuming a pseudoscalar mediator, when compared to the indirect detection results from Fermi-LAT.

A search for the production of heavy resonances decaying into top quark-antiquark pairs is presented. The analysis is performed in the lepton+jets and fully hadronic channels using data collected in proton-proton collisions at s√=13s=13 TeV using the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.6 fb−1. The selection is optimized for massive resonances, where the top quarks have large Lorentz boosts. No evidence for resonant tt¯tt¯ production is found in the data, and upper limits on the production cross section of heavy resonances are set. A search for the production of a single top quark in association with a Z boson is presented, both to identify the expected standard model process and to search for flavour-changing neutral current interactions. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1 recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at s√=8s=8 TeV. Final states with three leptons (electrons or muons) and at least one jet are investigated. An events yield compatible with tZq standard model production is observed, and the corresponding cross section is measured to be σ(pp → tZq → ℓνbℓ+ℓ−q) = 10− 7+ 8 fb with a significance of 2.4 standard deviations. No presence of flavour-changing neutral current production of tZq is observed. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level on the branching fractions of a top quark decaying to a Z boson and an up or a charm quark are found to be ℬ(t → Zu) < 0.022% and ℬ(t → Zc) < 0.049%.

A search for events containing four top quarks () is reported from proton–proton collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.6 fb−1. The analysis considers the single-lepton (e or μ)+jets and the opposite-sign dilepton (, , or )+jets channels. It uses boosted decision trees to combine information on the global event and jet properties to distinguish between and production. The number of events observed after all selection requirements is consistent with expectations from background and standard model signal predictions, and an upper limit is set on the cross section for production in the standard model of 94 fb at 95% confidence level ( the prediction), with an expected limit of 118 fb. This is combined with the results from the published CMS search in the same-sign dilepton channel, resulting in an improved limit of 69 fb at 95% confidence level ( the prediction), with an expected limit of 71 fb. These are the strongest constraints on the rate of production to date.

The CMS Collaboration presents the first measurement of the differential cross section of jets from charm quarks produced in proton–lead (pPb) collisions at a nucleon–nucleon center-of-mass energy of sNN=5.02TeV, as well as results from charm quark jets in proton–proton (pp) collisions at s=2.76 and 5.02TeV. By comparing the yields of the pPb and pp collision systems at the same energy, a nuclear modification factor for charm jets from 55 to 400 GeV/c in pPb collisions at sNN=5.02TeV of RpA=0.92±0.07(stat)±0.11(syst) is obtained. This is consistent with an absence of final-state energy loss for charm quarks in pPb collisions. In addition, the fraction of jets coming from charm quarks is found to be consistent with that predicted by pythia 6 for pp collisions at s=2.76 and 5.02TeV, and is independent of the jet transverse momentum from 55 to 400 GeV/c.

A measurement of electroweak-induced production of Wγ and two jets is performed, where the W boson decays leptonically. The data used in the analysis correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1 collected by the CMS experiment in s√=8 TeV proton-proton collisions produced at the LHC. Candidate events are selected with exactly one muon or electron, missing transverse momentum, one photon, and two jets with large rapidity separation. An excess over the hypothesis of the standard model without electroweak production of Wγ with two jets is observed with a significance of 2.7 standard deviations. The cross section measured in the fiducial region is 10.8 ± 4.1(stat) ± 3.4(syst) ± 0.3(lumi) fb, which is consistent with the standard model electroweak prediction. The total cross section for Wγ in association with two jets in the same fiducial region is measured to be 23.2 ± 4.3(stat) ± 1.7(syst) ± 0.6(lumi) fb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction from the combination of electroweak and quantum chromodynamics-induced processes. No deviations are observed from the standard model predictions and experimental limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings fM,0−7/Λ4, fT,0−2/Λ4, and fT,5−7/Λ4 are set at 95% confidence level.

The differential cross sections for inclusive production of hadrons are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using data collected by the CMS experiment that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 48.1 pb−1. The measurement uses the exclusive decay channel , with mesons that decay to a pair of muons. The results show a reasonable agreement with theoretical calculations within the uncertainties.

A measurement of the top quark mass is reportedin events containing a single top quark produced via the elec-troweaktchannel. The analysis is performed using data fromproton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector atthe LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, correspondingto an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1. Top quark candi-dates are reconstructed from their decay to a W boson and a bquark, with the W boson decaying leptonically to a muon anda neutrino. The final state signature and kinematic propertiesof single top quark events in thetchannel are used to enhancethe purity of the sample, suppressing the contribution fromtop quark pair production. A fit to the invariant mass distribu-tion of reconstructed top quark candidates yields a value ofthe top quark mass of 172.95±0.77 (stat)+0.97−0.93(syst) GeV.This result is in agreement with the current world average, and represents the first measurement of the top quark massin event topologies not dominated by top quark pair produc-tion, therefore contributing to future averages with partiallyuncorrelated systematic uncertainties and a largely uncorre-lated statistical uncertainty.

Searches are presented for direct production oftop or bottom squark pairs in proton–proton collisions at theCERN LHC. Two searches, based on complementary tech-niques, are performed in all-jet final states that are character-ized by a significant imbalance in transverse momentum. Anadditional search requires the presence of a charged leptonisolated from other activity in the event. The data were col-lected in 2015 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with theCMS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of2.3 fb−1. No statistically significant excess of events is foundbeyond the expected contribution from standard model pro-cesses. Exclusion limits are set in the context of simplifiedmodels of top or bottom squark pair production. Models withtop and bottom squark masses up to 830 and 890 GeV, respec-tively, are probed for light neutralinos. For models with topsquark masses of 675 GeV, neutralino masses up to 260 GeVare excluded at 95% confidence level.

A search for single production of vector-like top quark partners (T) decaying into a Higgs boson and a top quark is performed using data from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb−1. The top quark decay includes an electron or a muon while the Higgs boson decays into a pair of b quarks. No significant excess over standard model backgrounds is observed. Exclusion limits on the product of the production cross section and the branching fraction are derived in the T quark mass range 700 to 1800 GeV. For a mass of 1000 GeV, values of the product of the production cross section and the branching fraction greater than 0.8 and 0.7 pb are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming left- and right-handed coupling of the T quark to standard model particles, respectively. This is the first analysis setting exclusion limits on the cross section of singly produced vector-like T quarks at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV.

A search for new phenomena is performed infinal states containing one or more jets and an imbalance intransverse momentum in pp collisions at a centre-of-massenergy of 13 TeV. The analysed data sample, recorded withthe CMS detector at the CERN LHC, corresponds to an inte-grated luminosity of 2.3 fb−1. Several kinematic variablesare employed to suppress the dominant background, mul-tijet production, as well as to discriminate between otherstandard model and new physics processes. The search pro-vides sensitivity to a broad range of new-physics models thatyield a stable weakly interacting massive particle. The num-ber of observed candidate events is found to agree with theexpected contributions from standard model processes, andthe result is interpreted in the mass parameter space of four-teen simplified supersymmetric models that assume the pairproduction of gluinos or squarks and a range of decay modes. For models that assume gluino pair production, masses up to1575 and 975 GeV are excluded for gluinos and neutralinos, respectively. For models involving the pair production of topsquarks and compressed mass spectra, top squark masses upto 400 GeV are excluded.

Pair production of Y(1S) mesons is observed at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at s√=8 TeV by the CMS experiment in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.7 fb−1. Both Y(1S) candidates are fully reconstructed via their decays to μ+μ−. The fiducial acceptance region is defined by an absolute Y(1S) rapidity smaller than 2.0. The fiducial cross section for the production of Y(1S) pairs, assuming that both mesons decay isotropically, is measured to be 68.8±12.7 (stat)±7.4 (syst)±2.8 (B) pb, where the third uncertainty comes from the uncertainty in the branching fraction of Y(1S) decays to μ+μ−. Assuming instead that the Y(1S) mesons are produced with different polarizations leads to variations in the measured cross section in the range from −38% to +36%.

A measurement is presented of the cross section for the electroweak production of a Z boson and a photon in association with two jets in proton–proton collisions at . The Z bosons are identified through their decays to electron or muon pairs. The measurement is based on data collected with the CMS detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1. The electroweak contribution has a significance of 3.0 standard deviations, and the measured fiducial cross section is fb, while the summed electroweak and quantum chromodynamic total cross section in the same region is observed to be fb. Both measurements are consistent with the leading-order standard model predictions. Limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are set based on the mass distribution.

Differential and double-differential cross sections for the production of top quark pairs in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV are measured as a function of jet multiplicity and of kinematic variables of the top quarks and the top quark-antiquark system. This analysis is based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3  fb−1. The measurements are performed in the lepton+jets decay channels with a single muon or electron in the final state. The differential cross sections are presented at particle level, within a phase space close to the experimental acceptance, and at parton level in the full phase space. The results are compared to several standard model predictions.

This paper reports the measurement of J/ψ meson production in proton–proton (pp) and proton–lead (pPb) collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The data samples used in the analysis correspond to integrated luminosities of 28pb−1 and 35nb−1 for pp and pPb collisions, respectively. Prompt and nonprompt J/ψ mesons, the latter produced in the decay of B hadrons, are measured in their dimuon decay channels. Differential cross sections are measured in the transverse momentum range of 2<pT<30GeV/c, and center-of-mass rapidity ranges of |yCM|<2.4 (pp) and −2.87<yCM<1.93 (pPb). The nuclear modification factor, RpPb, is measured as a function of both pT and yCM. Small modifications to the J/ψ cross sections are observed in pPb relative to pp collisions. The ratio of J/ψ production cross sections in p-going and Pb-going directions, RFB, studied as functions of pT and yCM, shows a significant decrease for increasing transverse energy deposited at large pseudorapidities. These results, which cover a wide kinematic range, provide new insight on the role of cold nuclear matter effects on prompt and nonprompt J/ψ production.

A search is presented for bosons in events with an electron or muon and large missing transverse momentum, using proton–proton collision data at collected with the CMS detector in 2015 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of . No evidence of an excess of events relative to the standard model expectations is observed. For a boson described by the sequential standard model, upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction and lower limits are established on the new boson mass. Masses below 4.1 TeV are excluded combining electron and muon decay channels, significantly improving upon the results obtained with the 8 TeV data. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level on the product of the production cross section and branching fraction are also derived in combination with the 8 TeV data. Finally, exclusion limits are set for the production of generic bosons decaying into this final state using a model-independent approach.

The CMS tracker consists of 206 m2 of silicon strip sensors assembled on carbon fibrecomposite structures and is designed for operation in the temperature range from −25 to +25◦C.The mechanical stability of tracker components during physics operation was monitored with afew µm resolution using a dedicated laser alignment system as well as particle tracks from cosmicrays and hadron-hadron collisions. During the LHC operational period of 2011–2013 at stabletemperatures, the components of the tracker were observed to experience relative movements ofless than 30 µm. In addition, temperature variations were found to cause displacements of trackerstructures of about 2 µm/◦C, which largely revert to their initial positions when the temperature isrestored to its original value.

A search is performed for electroweak production of a vector-like top quark partner T of charge 2/3 in association with a standard model top or bottom quark, using 2.3 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at s√=13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The search targets T quarks decaying to a top quark and a Higgs boson in fully hadronic final states. For a T quark with mass above 1 TeV the daughter top quark and Higgs boson are highly Lorentz-boosted and can each appear as a single hadronic jet. Jet substructure and b tagging techniques are used to identify the top quark and Higgs boson jets, and to suppress the standard model backgrounds. An excess of events is searched for in the T quark candidate mass distribution in the data, which is found to be consistent with the expected backgrounds. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the single T quark production cross sections and the branching fraction B(T→tH), and these vary between 0.31 and 0.93 pb for T quark masses in the range 1000-1800 GeV. This is the first search for single electroweak production of a vector-like T quark in fully hadronic final states.

The relative modification of the promptψð2SÞandJ=ψyields fromppto PbPb collisions, at the center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair, is presented. The analysis is based onppand PbPb datasamples collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2015, corresponding to integrated luminosities of28.0pb−1and464μb−1, respectively. The double ratio of measured yields of prompt charmoniareconstructed through their decays into muon pairs,ðNψð2SÞ=NJ=ψÞPbPb=ðNψð2SÞ=NJ=ψÞpp, is determinedas a function of PbPb collision centrality and charmonium transverse momentumpT, in two kinematicintervals:jyj<1.6covering6.5<pT<30GeV=cand1.6<jyj<2.4covering3<pT<30GeV=c.The centrality-integrated double ratios are0.36 0.08ðstatÞ 0.05ðsystÞin the first interval and0.24 0.22ðstatÞ 0.09ðsystÞin the second. The double ratio is lower than unity in all the measured bins, suggesting that theψð2SÞyield is more suppressed than theJ=ψyield in the explored phase space.

The invariance of the standard model (SM) under the CPT transformation predicts equality of particle and antiparticle masses. This prediction is tested by measuring the mass difference between the top quark and antiquark () that are produced in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, using events with a muon or an electron and at least four jets in the final state. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, and yields a value of , which is consistent with the SM expectation. This result is significantly more precise than previously reported measurements.

The production yields of ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) quarkonium states are measured through their decays into muon pairs in the CMS detector, in PbPb and pp collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 2.76 TeV. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of and for PbPb and pp collisions, respectively. Differential production cross sections are reported as functions of ϒ rapidity y up to 2.4, and transverse momentum up to . A strong centrality-dependent suppression is observed in PbPb relative to pp collisions, by factors of up to ≈2 and 8, for the ϒ(1S) and ϒ(2S) states, respectively. No significant dependence of this suppression is observed as a function of y or . The ϒ(3S) state is not observed in PbPb collisions, which corresponds to a suppression for the centrality-integrated data by at least a factor of ≈7 at a 95% confidence level. The observed suppression is in agreement with theoretical scenarios modeling the sequential melting of quarkonium states in a quark gluon plasma.
