A first search for pair production of dark matter candidates through vector boson fusion in proton-proton collisions at √s=8  TeV is performed with the CMS detector. The vector boson fusion topology enhances missing transverse momentum, providing a way to probe supersymmetry, even in the case of a compressed mass spectrum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 18.5  fb−1, recorded by the CMS experiment. The observed dijet mass spectrum is consistent with the standard model expectation. In an effective field theory, dark matter masses are explored as a function of contact interaction strength. The most stringent limit on bottom squark production with mass below 315 GeV is also reported, assuming a 5 GeV mass difference with respect to the lightest neutralino.

A measurement of the top quark pair production ( tt¯tt¯ ) cross section in proton–proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeVTeV is presented using data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 fb−1fb−1 . This analysis is performed in the tt¯tt¯ decay channels with one isolated, high transverse momentum electron or muon and at least four jets, at least one of which is required to be identified as originating from hadronization of a b quark. The calibration of the jet energy scale and the efficiency of b jet identification are determined from data. The measured tt¯tt¯ cross section is 228.5±3.8(stat)±13.7(syst)±6.0(lumi) pb228.5±3.8(stat)±13.7(syst)±6.0(lumi) pb . This measurement is compared with an analysis of 7 TeVTeV data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1fb−1 , to determine the ratio of 8 TeVTeV to 7 TeVTeV cross sections, which is found to be 1.43±0.04(stat)±0.07(syst)±0.05(lumi)1.43±0.04(stat)±0.07(syst)±0.05(lumi) . The measurements are in agreement with QCD predictions up to next-to-next-to-leading order.

An inclusive search for supersymmetry using razor variables is performed in events with four or more jets and no more than one lepton. The results are based on a sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3  fb−1 collected with the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13  TeV. No significant excess over the background prediction is observed in data, and 95% confidence level exclusion limits are placed on the masses of new heavy particles in a variety of simplified models. Assuming that pair-produced gluinos decay only via three-body processes involving third-generation quarks plus a neutralino, and that the neutralino is the lightest supersymmetric particle with a mass of 200 GeV, gluino masses below 1.6 TeV are excluded for any branching fractions for the individual gluino decay modes. For some specific decay mode scenarios, gluino masses up to 1.65 TeV are excluded. For decays to first- and second-generation quarks and a neutralino with a mass of 200 GeV, gluinos with masses up to 1.4 TeV are excluded. Pair production of top squarks decaying to a top quark and a neutralino with a mass of 100 GeV is excluded for top squark masses up to 750 GeV.

Results are presented from searches for R-parity-violating supersymmetry in events produced in ppcollisions at √s=8  TeV at the LHC. Final states with 0, 1, 2, or multiple leptons are considered independently. The analysis is performed on data collected by the CMS experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5  fb−1. No excesses of events above the standard model expectations are observed, and 95% confidence level limits are set on supersymmetric particle masses and production cross sections. The results are interpreted in models featuring R-parity-violating decays of the lightest supersymmetric particle, which in the studied scenarios can be either the gluino, a bottom squark, or a neutralino. In a gluino pair production model with baryon number violation, gluinos with a mass less than 0.98 and 1.03 TeV are excluded, by analyses in a fully hadronic and one-lepton final state, respectively. An analysis in a dilepton final state is used to exclude bottom squarks with masses less than 307 GeV in a model considering bottom squark pair production. Multilepton final states are considered in the context of either strong or electroweak production of superpartners and are used to set limits on the masses of the lightest supersymmetric particles. These limits range from 300 to 900 GeV in models with leptonic and up to approximately 700 GeV in models with semileptonic R-parity-violating couplings.

A first measurement of the top quark mass in the decay channel t → (W → ℓν) (b → J/ψ + X → μ+μ− + X) is presented. The analysis uses events selected from the proton-proton collisions recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1, with 666 tt¯ and single top quark candidate events containing a reconstructed J/ψ candidate decaying into an oppositely-charged muon pair. The mass of the (J/ψ + ℓ) system, where ℓ is an electron or a muon from W boson decay, is used to extract a top quark mass of 173.5 ± 3.0 (stat) ± 0.9 (syst) GeV.

A search for dark matter particles directly produced in proton-proton collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 18.8 fb−1, at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The event selection requires at least two jets and no isolated leptons. The razor variables are used to quantify the transverse momentum balance in the jet momenta. The study is performed separately for events with and without jets originating from b quarks. The observed yields are consistent with the expected backgrounds and, depending on the nature of the production mechanism, dark matter production at the LHC is excluded at 90% confidence level for a mediator mass scale Λ below 1 TeV. The use of razor variables yields results that complement those previously published.

A search is presented for an excess of events with large missing transverse momentum in association with at least one highly energetic jet, in a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The results are interpreted using a set of simplified models for the production of dark matter via a scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, or axial vector mediator. Additional sensitivity is achieved by tagging events consistent with the jets originating from a hadronically decaying vector boson. This search uses jet substructure techniques to identify hadronically decaying vector bosons in both Lorentz-boosted and resolved scenarios. This analysis yields improvements of 80% in terms of excluded signal cross sections with respect to the previous CMS analysis using the same data set. No significant excess with respect to the standard model expectation is observed and limits are placed on the parameter space of the simplified models. Mediator masses between 80 and 400 GeV in the scalar and pseudoscalar models, and up to 1.5 TeV in the vector and axial vector models, are excluded.

Measurements of two- and multi-particle angular correlations in pp collisions at View the MathML sources=5,7, and 13TeV are presented as a function of charged-particle multiplicity. The data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of View the MathML source1.0pb−1 (5 TeV), View the MathML source6.2pb−1 (7 TeV), and View the MathML source0.7pb−1 (13 TeV), were collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. The second-order (v2v2) and third-order (v3v3) azimuthal anisotropy harmonics of unidentified charged particles, as well as v2v2 of View the MathML sourceKS0 and View the MathML sourceΛ/Λ‾ particles, are extracted from long-range two-particle correlations as functions of particle multiplicity and transverse momentum. For high-multiplicity pp events, a mass ordering is observed for the v2v2 values of charged hadrons (mostly pions), View the MathML sourceKS0, and View the MathML sourceΛ/Λ‾, with lighter particle species exhibiting a stronger azimuthal anisotropy signal below View the MathML sourcepT≈2GeV/c. For 13 TeV data, the v2v2 signals are also extracted from four- and six-particle correlations for the first time in pp collisions, with comparable magnitude to those from two-particle correlations. These observations are similar to those seen in pPb and PbPb collisions, and support the interpretation of a collective origin for the observed long-range correlations in high-multiplicity pp collisions.

Measurements are presented of the cross section for the production of at least four jets, of which at least two originate from b quarks, in proton-proton collisions. Data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3  pb−1. The cross section is measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum for pT>20  GeV, and of the jet pseudorapidity for |η|<2.4 (b jets), 4.7 (untagged jets). The correlations in azimuthal angle and pT between the jets are also studied. The inclusive cross section is measured to be σ(pp→2b+2j+X)=69±3(stat)±24(syst)  nb. The η and pT distributions of the four jets and the correlations between them are well reproduced by event generators that combine perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading-order accuracy with contributions from parton showers and multiparton interactions.

Results are presented of a search for heavy stable charged particles produced in proton-proton collisionsat ffiffi s p ¼ 13 TeV using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.5 fb−1 collected in2015 with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The search is conducted using signatures of anomalouslyhigh energy deposits in the silicon tracker and long time-of-flight measurements by the muon system. Thedata are consistent with the expected background, and upper limits are set on the cross sections for production of long-lived gluinos, top squarks, tau sleptons, and leptonlike long-lived fermions. These upper limits are equivalently expressed as lower limits on the masses of new states; the limits for gluinos, ranging up to 1610 GeV, are the most stringent to date. Limits on the cross sections for direct pair production of long-lived tau sleptons are also determined.

A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model in final states with two opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons, jets, and missing transverse momentum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at s√=13s=13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2015. The analysis uses the invariant mass of the lepton pair, searching for a kinematic edge or a resonant-like excess compatible with the Z boson mass. Both search modes use several event categories in order to increase the sensitivity to new physics. These categories are based on the rapidity of the leptons, the multiplicity of jets and b jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta, and missing transverse momentum. The observations in all signal regions are consistent with the expectations from the standard model, and the results are interpreted in the context of simplified models of supersymmetry.

A measurement is presented of the cross section for the electroweak production of a W boson in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data set was collected with the CMS detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.3 fb−1. The measured fiducial cross section for W bosons decaying to electrons or muons and for pTj1> 60 GeV, pTj2> 50 GeV, |ηj| < 4.7, and mjj> 1000 GeV is 0.42 ± 0.04 (stat) ± 0.09 (syst) ± 0.01 (lumi) pb. This result is consistent with the standard model leading-order prediction of 0.50 ± 0.02 (scale) ± 0.02 (PDF) pb obtained with MadGraph5_amc@nlo 2.1 interfaced to pythia 6.4. This is the first cross section measurement for this process.

Interactions between jets and the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy ion collisions are studied via the angular distributions of summed charged-particle transverse momenta (pT) with respect to both the leading and subleading jet axes in high-pT dijet events. The contributions of charged particles in different momentum ranges to the overall event pT balance are decomposed into short-range jet peaks and a long-range azimuthal asymmetry in charged-particle pT. The results for PbPb collisions are compared to those in pp collisions using data collected in 2011 and 2013, at collision energy sNN−−−−√=2.76sNN=2.76 TeV with integrated luminosities of 166 μb−1 and 5.3 pb−1, respectively, by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Measurements are presented as functions of PbPb collision centrality, charged-particle pT, relative azimuth, and radial distance from the jet axis for balanced and unbalanced dijets.

The ZZ production cross section, σ(pp → ZZ) =14.6+1.9−1.8 (stat) +0.5−0.3 (syst)±0.2 (theo)±0.4 (lumi) pb, is measured for events with two opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs produced in the mass region 60 < m+− ,m+− < 120 GeV. The Z boson branchingfraction to four leptons is measured to be B(Z → +−+−) = 4.9+0.8−0.7 (stat)+0.3−0.2 (syst)+0.2−0.1 (theo) ±0.1 (lumi)×10−6 for the four-lepton invariant mass in the range 80 < m+−+− < 100 GeV and dileptonmass m+− > 4 GeV for all opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pairs. The results are in agreement withstandard model predictions.

Searches for new physics by the CMS collaboration are interpreted in the framework of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model (pMSSM). The data samples used in this study were collected at s√=7 and 8 TeV and have integrated luminosities of 5.0 fb−1 and 19.5 fb−1, respectively. A global Bayesian analysis is performed, incorporating results from a broad range of CMS supersymmetry searches, as well as constraints from other experiments. Because the pMSSM incorporates several well-motivated assumptions that reduce the 120 parameters of the MSSM to just 19 parameters defined at the electroweak scale, it is possible to assess the results of the study in a relatively straightforward way. Approximately half of the model points in a potentially accessible subspace of the pMSSM are excluded, including all pMSSM model points with a gluino mass below 500 GeV, as well as models with a squark mass less than 300 GeV. Models with chargino and neutralino masses below 200 GeV are disfavored, but no mass range of model points can be ruled out based on the analyses considered. The nonexcluded regions in the pMSSM parameter space are characterized in terms of physical processes and key observables, and implications for future searches are discussed.

The cross section for pair production of top quarks (t¯t) with high transverse momenta is measured in pp collisions, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with ffiffi s p ¼ 8 TeV in data corresponding to anintegrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1. The measurement is performed using lepton þ jets events, where one top quark decays semileptonically, while the second top quark decays to a hadronic final state. The hadronic decay is reconstructed as a single, large-radius jet, and identified as a top quark candidate using jet substructure techniques. The integrated cross section and the differential cross sections as a function of top quark pT and rapidity are measured at particle level within a fiducial region related to the detector-level requirements and at parton level. The particle-level integrated cross section is found to be σt¯t ¼ 0.499 0.035ðstat þ systÞ 0.095ðtheoÞ 0.013ðlumiÞ pb for top quark pT > 400 GeV. The parton-level measurement is σt¯t ¼ 1.44 0.10ðstat þ systÞ 0.29ðtheoÞ 0.04ðlumiÞ pb. The integrated and differential cross section results are compared to predictions from several event generators.

The W boson helicity fractions from top quark decays in tt events are measured using data from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data were collected in 2012 with the CMSdetector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.8 fb−1. Events are reconstructedwith either one muon or one electron, along with four jets in the final state, with two of the jetsbeing identified as originating from b quarks. The measured helicity fractions from both channels arecombined, yielding F0 = 0.681 ± 0.012 (stat) ± 0.023 (syst), FL = 0.323 ± 0.008 (stat) ± 0.014 (syst), andFR = −0.004 ± 0.005 (stat) ± 0.014 (syst) for the longitudinal, left-, and right-handed components of thehelicity, respectively. These measurements of the W boson helicity fractions are the most accurate to dateand they agree with the predictions from the standard model.

A direct search for lepton flavour violating decays of the Higgs boson (H) in the H → eτ and H → eμchannels is described. The data sample used in the search was collected in proton–proton collisionsat √s = 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of19.7 fb−1. No evidence is found for lepton flavour violating decays in either final state. Upper limitson the branching fractions, B(H → eτ ) < 0.69% and B(H → eμ) < 0.035%, are set at the 95% confidencelevel. The constraint set on B(H → eτ ) is an order of magnitude more stringent than the existing indirectlimits. The limits are used to constrain the corresponding flavour violating Yukawa couplings, absent inthe standard model

A search for new physics is performed using events that contain one or more jets, no isolated leptons, and a large transverse momentum imbalance, as measured through the MT2 variable, which is an extension of the transverse mass in events with two invisible particles. The results are based on a sample of proton-proton collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, and that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb−1. The observed event yields in the data are consistent with predictions for the standard model backgrounds. The results are interpreted using simplified models of supersymmetry and are expressed in terms of limits on the masses of potential new colored particles. Assuming that the lightest neutralino is stable and has a mass less than about 500 GeV, gluino masses up to 1550-1750 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, depending on the gluino decay mechanism. For the scenario of direct production of squark-antisquark pairs, top squarks with masses up to 800 GeV are excluded, assuming a 100% branching fraction for the decay to a top quark and neutralino. Similarly, bottom squark masses are excluded up to 880 GeV, and masses of light-flavor squarks are excluded up to 600-1260 GeV, depending on the degree of degeneracy of the squark masses.

A measurement of the decorrelation of azimuthal angles between the two jets with the largest transverse momenta is presented for seven regions of leading jet transverse momentum up to 2.2 TeVTeV . The analysis is based on the proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeVTeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1fb−1 . The dijet azimuthal decorrelation is caused by the radiation of additional jets and probes the dynamics of multijet production. The results are compared to fixed-order predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and to simulations using Monte Carlo event generators that include parton showers, hadronization, and multiparton interactions. Event generators with only two outgoing high transverse momentum partons fail to describe the measurement, even when supplemented with next-to-leading-order QCD corrections and parton showers. Much better agreement is achieved when at least three outgoing partons are complemented through either next-to-leading-order predictions or parton showers. This observation emphasizes the need to improve predictions for multijet production.

A search is presented for the production of two Higgs bosons in final states containing two photons and two bottom quarks. Both resonant and nonresonant hypotheses are investigated. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7  fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at s√=8  TeV collected with the CMS detector. Good agreement is observed between data and predictions of the standard model (SM). Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the production cross section of new particles and compared to the prediction for the existence of a warped extra dimension. When the decay to two Higgs bosons is kinematically allowed, assuming a mass scale ΛR=1  TeV for the model, the data exclude a radion scalar at masses below 980 GeV. The first Kaluza-Klein excitation mode of the graviton in the RS1 Randall-Sundrum model is excluded for masses between 325 and 450 GeV. An upper limit of 0.71 pb is set on the nonresonant two-Higgs-boson cross section in the SM-like hypothesis. Limits are also derived on nonresonant production assuming anomalous Higgs-boson couplings.

A search is presented for the Higgs boson off-shell production in gluon fusionand vector boson fusion processes with the Higgs boson decaying into a W+W− pair and theW bosons decaying leptonically. The data observed in this analysis are used to constrainthe Higgs boson total decay width. The analysis is based on the data collected by the CMSexperiment at the LHC, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 4.9 fb−1 at a centre-ofmassenergy of 7 TeV and 19.4 fb−1 at 8 TeV, respectively. An observed (expected) upperlimit on the off-shell Higgs boson event yield normalised to the standard model predictionof 2.4 (6.2) is obtained at the 95% CL for the gluon fusion process and of 19.3 (34.4) forthe vector boson fusion process. Observed and expected limits on the total width of 26and 66 MeV are found, respectively, at the 95% confidence level (CL). These limits arecombined with the previous result in the ZZ channel leading to observed and expected 95%CL upper limits on the width of 13 and 26 MeV, respectively.

Measurements are reported of the normalized differential cross sections for top quark pair production with respect to four kinematic event variables: the missing transverse energy; the scalar sum of the jet transverse momentum (pT); the scalar sum of the pT of all objects in the event; and the pT of leptonically decaying W bosons from top quark decays. The data sample, collected using the CMS detector at the LHC, consists of 5.0  fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at s√=7  TeV and 19.7  fb−1 at s√=8  TeV. Top quark pair events containing one electron or muon are selected. The results are presented after correcting for detector effects to allow direct comparison with theoretical predictions. No significant deviations from the predictions of several standard model event simulation generators are observed.

A search is presented for single top quark production in the s channel in proton-proton collisions with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in decay modes of the top quark containing a muon or an electron in the final state. The signal is extracted through a maximum-likelihood fit to the distribution of a multivariate discriminant defined using boosted decision trees to separate the expected signal contribution from background processes. The analysis uses data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV and corresponding to integrated luminosities of 5.1 and 19.7 fb−1, respectively. The measured cross sections of 7.1 ± 8.1 pb (at 7 TeV) and 13.4 ± 7.3 pb (at 8 TeV) result in a best fit value of 2.0 ± 0.9 for the combined ratio of the measured and expected values. The signal significance is 2.5 standard deviations, and the upper limit on the rate relative to the standard model expectation is 4.7 at 95% confidence level.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and its experiments were conceived to tackle open questions in particle physics. The mechanism of the generation of mass of fundamental particles has been elucidated with the discovery of the Higgs boson. It is clear that the standard model is not the final theory. The open questions still awaiting clues or answers, from the LHC and other experiments, include: What is the composition of dark matter and of dark energy? Why is there more matter than anti-matter? Are there more space dimensions than the familiar three? What is the path to the unification of all the fundamental forces? This talk will discuss the status of, and prospects for, the search for new particles, symmetries and forces in order to address the open questions. This article is part of the themed issue 'Unifying physics and technology in light of Maxwell's equations'.

The decorrelation in the azimuthal angle between the most forward and the most backward jets (Mueller-Navelet jets) is measured in data collected in pp collisions with the CMS detector at the LHC at s=7 TeV. The measurement is presented in the form of distributions of azimuthal-angle differences, Δϕ, between the Mueller-Navelet jets, the average cosines of (π − Δϕ), 2(π − Δϕ), and 3(π − Δϕ), and ratios of these cosines. The jets are required to have transverse momenta, pT, in excess of 35 GeV and rapidities, |y|, of less than 4.7. The results are presented as a function of the rapidity separation, Δy, between the Mueller-Navelet jets, reaching Δy up to 9.4 for the first time. The results are compared to predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators and to analytical predictions based on the DGLAP and BFKL parton evolution schemes.[Figure not available: see fulltext.]
