Measurements are presented of the single-diffractive dijet cross section and the diffractive cross section as a function of the proton fractional momentum loss ξ and the four-momentum transfer squared t. Both processes p p → p X and p p → X p , i.e. with the proton scattering to either side of the interaction point, are measured, where X includes at least two jets; the results of the two processes are averaged. The analyses are based on data collected simultaneously with the CMS and TOTEM detectors at the LHC in proton–proton collisions at s√=8TeV during a dedicated run with β∗=90m at low instantaneous luminosity and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 37.5nb−1. The single-diffractive dijet cross section σ p X jj, in the kinematic region ξ<0.1, 0.03<|t|<1GeV2, with at least two jets with transverse momentum pT>40GeV, and pseudorapidity |η|<4.4, is 21.7±0.9(stat)+3.0−3.3(syst)±0.9(lumi)nb. The ratio of the single-diffractive to inclusive dijet yields, normalised per unit of ξ, is presented as a function of x, the longitudinal momentum fraction of the proton carried by the struck parton. The ratio in the kinematic region defined above, for x values in the range −2.9≤log10x≤−1.6, is R=(σ p X jj/Δξ)/σjj=0.025±0.001(stat)±0.003(syst), where σ p X jj and σjj are the single-diffractive and inclusive dijet cross sections, respectively. The results are compared with predictions from models of diffractive and nondiffractive interactions. Monte Carlo predictions based on the HERA diffractive parton distribution functions agree well with the data when corrected for the effect of soft rescattering between the spectator partons.

A search is performed for W bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark in the all-hadronic final state,in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The analyzed data were collected bythe CMS experiment between 2016 and 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1.Deep neural network algorithms are used to identify the jet initiated by the bottom quark and thejet containing the decay products of the top quark when the W boson from the top quark decayshadronically. No excess above the estimated standard model background is observed. Upper limits onthe production cross sections of W bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark are set. Both left- andright-handed W bosons with masses below 3.4 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, and the moststringent limits to date on W bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark in the all-hadronic final stateare obtained.

The second-order Fourier coefficients (v2) characterizing the azimuthal distributions of Υ(1S) and Υ(2S)mesons produced in PbPb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV are studied. The Υ mesons are reconstructed intheir dimuon decay channel, as measured by the CMS detector. The collected data set corresponds toan integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb−1. The scalar product method is used to extract the v2 coefficientsof the azimuthal distributions. Results are reported for the rapidity range |y| < 2.4, in the transversemomentum interval 0 < pT < 50 GeV/c, and in three centrality ranges of 10–30%, 30–50% and 50–90%.In contrast to the J/ψ mesons, the measured v2 values for the Υ mesons are found to be consistent withzero.

A search is performed for the rare decay W± → π±γ in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV. Datacorresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1 were collected during 2016 to 2018 with the CMSdetector. This analysis exploits a novel search strategy based on W boson production in top quark pairevents. An inclusive search for the W± → π±γ decay is not optimal at the LHC because of the hightrigger thresholds. Instead, a trigger selection is exploited in which the W boson originating from one ofthe top quarks is used to tag the event in a leptonic decay. The W boson emerging from the other topquark is used to search for the W± → π±γ signature. Such decays are characterized by an isolatedtrack pointing to a large energy deposit, and by an isolated photon of large transverse momentum. The presence of b quark jets reduces the background from the hadronization of light-flavor quarks andgluons. The W± → π±γ decay is not observed. An upper exclusion limit is set to this branching fraction, corresponding to 1.50 × 10−5 at 95% confidence level, whereas the expected upper exclusion limit is0.85+0.52−0.29 × 10−5.

A search for leptoquarks produced singly and in pairs in proton-proton collisions is presented. Weconsider the leptoquark (LQ) to be a scalar particle of charge −1/3e coupling to a top quark plus atau lepton (tτ) or a bottom quark plus a neutrino (bν), or a vector particle of charge +2/3e, coupling totν or bτ. These choices are motivated by models that can explain a series of anomalies observed in themeasurement of B meson decays. In this analysis the signatures tτνb and tτν are probed, using datarecorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at √s = 13 TeV and that correspond to an integratedluminosity of 137 fb−1. These signatures have not been previously explored in a dedicated search. Thedata are found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction. Lower limits at 95% confidencelevel are set on the LQ mass in the range 0.98–1.73 TeV, depending on the LQ spin and its coupling λ toa lepton and a quark, and assuming equal couplings for the two LQ decay modes considered. These arethe most stringent constraints to date on the existence of leptoquarks in this scenario.

Measurements of Higgs boson production cross sections and couplings in events where the Higgs boson decays into a pair of photons are reported. Events are selected from a sample of proton-proton collisions at s√ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS detector at the LHC from 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1. Analysis categories enriched in Higgs boson events produced via gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, vector boson associated production, and production associated with top quarks are constructed. The total Higgs boson signal strength, relative to the standard model (SM) prediction, is measured to be 1.12±0.09. Other properties of the Higgs boson are measured, including SM signal strength modifiers, production cross sections, and its couplings to other particles. These include the most precise measurements of gluon fusion and vector boson fusion Higgs boson production in several different kinematic regions, the first measurement of Higgs boson production in association with a top quark pair in five regions of the Higgs boson transverse momentum, and an upper limit on the rate of Higgs boson production in association with a single top quark. All results are found to be in agreement with the SM expectations.

Results of the Model Unspecific Search in CMS (MUSiC), using proton–proton collision data recorded at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb−1, are presented. The MUSiC analysis searches for anomalies that could be signatures of physics beyond the standard model. The analysis is based on the comparison of observed data with the standard model prediction, as determined from simulation, in several hundred final states and multiple kinematic distributions. Events containing at least one electron or muon are classified based on their final state topology, and an automated search algorithm surveys the observed data for deviations from the prediction. The sensitivity of the search is validated using multiple methods. No significant deviations from the predictions have been observed. For a wide range of final state topologies, agreement is found between the data and the standard model simulation. A fiducial cross section for Wγ production in proton-proton collisions is measured at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 137  fb^{-1} of data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. The W→eν and μν decay modes are used in a maximum-likelihood fit to the lepton-photon invariant mass distribution to extract the combined cross section. The measured cross section is compared with theoretical expectations at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics. In addition, 95% confidence level intervals are reported for anomalous triple-gauge couplings within the framework of effective field theory.

The Ξ_{b}^{-}π^{+}π^{-} invariant mass spectrum is investigated with an event sample of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016-2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140  fb^{-1}. The ground state Ξ_{b}^{-} is reconstructed via its decays to J/ψΞ^{-} and J/ψΛK^{-}. A narrow resonance, labeled Ξ_{b}(6100)^{-}, is observed at a Ξ_{b}^{-}π^{+}π^{-} invariant mass of 6100.3±0.2(stat)±0.1(syst)±0.6(Ξ_{b}^{-})  MeV, where the last uncertainty reflects the precision of the Ξ_{b}^{-} baryon mass. The upper limit on the Ξ_{b}(6100)^{-} natural width is determined to be 1.9  MeV at 95% confidence level. The low Ξ_{b}(6100)^{-} signal yield observed in data does not allow a measurement of the quantum numbers of the new state. However, following analogies with the established excited Ξ_{c} baryon states, the new Ξ_{b}(6100)^{-} resonance and its decay sequence are consistent with the orbitally excited Ξ_{b}^{-} baryon, with spin and parity quantum numbers J^{P}=3/2^{-}.

Production cross sections of the Higgs boson are measured in the H→ZZ→4ℓ (ℓ=e,μ) decay channel. A data sample of proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, collected by the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137fb−1 is used. The signal strength modifier μ, defined as the ratio of the Higgs boson production rate in the 4ℓ channel to the standard model (SM) expectation, is measured to be μ=0.94±0.07(stat)+0.09−0.08(syst) at a fixed value of mH=125.38GeV. The signal strength modifiers for the individual Higgs boson production modes are also reported. The inclusive fiducial cross section for the H→4ℓ process is measured to be 2.84+0.23−0.22(stat)+0.26−0.21(syst)fb, which is compatible with the SM prediction of 2.84±0.15fb for the same fiducial region. Differential cross sections as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity of the Higgs boson, the number of associated jets, and the transverse momentum of the leading associated jet are measured. A new set of cross section measurements in mutually exclusive categories targeted to identify production mechanisms and kinematical features of the events is presented. The results are in agreement with the SM predictions.

Measurements of the differential cross sections of Z + jets and γ + jets production, and their ratio, are presented as a function of the boson transverse momentum. Measurements are also presented of the angular distribution between the Z boson and the closest jet. The analysis is based on pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1 recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The results, corrected for detector effects, are compared with various theoretical predictions. In general, the predictions at higher orders in perturbation theory show better agreement with the measurements. This work provides the first measurement of the ratio of the differential cross sections of Z + jets and γ + jets production at 13 TeV, as well as the first direct measurement of Z bosons emitted collinearly with a jet.

Measurements of the total and differential fiducial cross sections for the Z boson decaying into two neutrinos are presented at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data were collected by the CMS detector in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. In these measurements, events are selected containing an imbalance in transverse momentum and one or more energetic jets. The fiducial differential cross section is measured as a function of the Z boson transverse momentum. The results are combined with a previous measurement of charged-lepton decays of the Z boson. The measured total fiducial cross section for events with Z boson transverse momentum greater than 200 GeV is 3000+180−170 fb.Measurements of the total and differential fiducial cross sections for the Z boson decaying into two neutrinos are presented at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Differential cross sections for the Drell-Yan process, including Z boson production, using the dimuon decay channel are measured in proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV. A data sample recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 173 nb−1. The differential cross section as a function of the dimuon mass is measured in the range 15–600 GeV, for the first time in proton-nucleus collisions. It is also reported as a function of dimuon rapidity over the mass ranges 15–60 GeV and 60–120 GeV, and ratios for the p-going over the Pb-going beam directions are built. In both mass ranges, the differential cross sections as functions of the dimuon transverse momentum pT and of a geometric variable ϕ* are measured, where ϕ* highly correlates with pT but is determined with higher precision. In the Z mass region, the rapidity dependence of the data indicate a modification of the distribution of partons within a lead nucleus as compared to the proton case. The data are more precise than predictions based upon current models of parton distributions.

Modifications to the distribution of charged particles with respect to high transverse momentum (pT) jets passing through a quark-gluon plasma are explored using the CMS detector. Back-to-back dijets are analyzed in lead-lead and proton-proton collisions at sNN−−−√ = 5.02 TeV via correlations of charged particles in bins of relative pseudorapidity and angular distance from the leading and subleading jet axes. In comparing the lead-lead and proton-proton collision results, modifications to the charged-particle relative distance distribution and to the momentum distributions around the jet axis are found to depend on the dijet momentum balance xj , which is the ratio between the subleading and leading jet pT. For events with xj ≈ 1, these modifications are observed for both the leading and subleading jets. However, while subleading jets show significant modifications for events with a larger dijet momentum imbalance, much smaller modifications are found for the leading jets in these events.

The C P-violating weak phase φs and the decay width difference s between the light and heavy B0smass eigenstates are measured with the CMS detector at the LHC in a sample of 48 500 reconstructedB0s → J/ψ φ(1020) → μ+μ− K+K− events. The measurement is based on a data sample correspondingto an integrated luminosity of 96.4 fb−1, collected in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV in2017–2018. To extract the values of φs and s, a time-dependent and flavor-tagged angular analysisof the μ+μ−K+K− final state is performed. The analysis employs a dedicated tagging trigger and anovel opposite-side muon flavor tagger based on machine learning techniques. The measurement yieldsφs = −11±50 (stat)±10 (syst) mrad and s = 0.114±0.014 (stat)±0.007 (syst) ps−1, in agreement withthe standard model predictions. When combined with the previous CMS measurement at √s = 8 TeV,the following values are obtained: φs = −21 ± 44 (stat) ± 10 (syst) mrad, s = 0.1032 ± 0.0095 (stat) ±0.0048 (syst) ps−1, a significant improvement over the 8 TeV result.

The strong Coulomb field created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is expected to produce a rapiditydependent difference (v2) in the second Fourier coefficient of the azimuthal distribution (elliptic flow,v2) between D0 (uc) and D0 (uc) mesons. Motivated by the search for evidence of this field, the CMSdetector at the LHC is used to perform the first measurement of v2. The rapidity-averaged value isfound to be v2 = 0.001±0.001 (stat)±0.003 (syst) in PbPb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV. In addition, the influence of the collision geometry is explored by measuring the D0 and D0mesons v2 and triangularflow coefficient (v3) as functions of rapidity, transverse momentum (pT), and event centrality (a measureof the overlap of the two Pb nuclei). A clear centrality dependence of prompt D0 meson v2 values isobserved, while the v3 is largely independent of centrality. These trends are consistent with expectationsof flow driven by the initial-state geometry.

We present the first study of charged-hadron production associated with jets originating from b quarks in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The data sample used in this study was collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 27.4 pb−1. To characterize the jet substructure, the differential jet shapes, defined as the normalized transverse momentum distribution of charged hadrons as a function of angular distance from the jet axis, are measured for b jets. In addition to the jet shapes, the per-jet yields of charged particles associated with b jets are also quantified, again as a function of the angular distance with respect to the jet axis. Extracted jet shape and particle yield distributions for b jets are compared with results for inclusive jets, as well as with the predictions from the pythia and herwig++ event generators.

A search for phenomena beyond the standard model in final states with two oppositely charged same-flavor leptons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The search uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at s√ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Three potential signatures of physics beyond the standard model are explored: an excess of events with a lepton pair, whose invariant mass is consistent with the Z boson mass; a kinematic edge in the invariant mass distribution of the lepton pair; and the nonresonant production of two leptons. The observed event yields are consistent with those expected from standard model backgrounds. The results of the first search allow the exclusion of gluino masses up to 1870 GeV, as well as chargino (neutralino) masses up to 750 (800) GeV, while those of the searches for the other two signatures allow the exclusion of light-flavor (bottom) squark masses up to 1800 (1600) GeV and slepton masses up to 700 GeV, respectively, at 95% confidence level within certain supersymmetry scenarios.

Angular distributions of the decay B+ → K∗(892)+μ+μ− are studied using events collected with the CMS detector in s√ = 8 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.0 fb−1. The forward-backward asymmetry of the muons and the longitudinal polarization of the K∗(892)+ meson are determined as a function of the square of the dimuon invariant mass. These are the first results from this exclusive decay mode and are in agreement with a standard model prediction.

Measurements are presented of differential cross sections for the production of Z bosons in association with at least one jet initiated by a charm quark in pp collisions at s√ = 13 TeV. The data recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. The final states contain a pair of electrons or muons that are the decay products of a Z boson, and a jet consistent with being initiated by a charm quark produced in the hard interaction. Differential cross sections as a function of the transverse momentum pT of the Z boson and pT of the charm jet are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo event generators. The inclusive production cross section 405.4 ± 5.6 (stat) ± 24.3 (exp) ± 3.7 (theo) pb, is measured in a fiducial region requiring both leptons to have pseudorapidity |η| < 2.4 and pT > 10 GeV, at least one lepton with pT > 26 GeV, and a mass of the pair in the range 71–111 GeV, while the charm jet is required to have pT > 30 GeV and |η| < 2.4. These are the first measurements of these cross sections in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV.

This paper presents new sets of parameters (“tunes”) for the underlying-event model of the HERWIG7 event generator. These parameters control the description of multiple-parton interactions (MPI) and colour reconnection in HERWIG7, and are obtained from a fit to minimum-bias data collected by the CMS experiment at s√=0.9, 7, and 13TeV. The tunes are based on the NNPDF 3.1 next-to-next-to-leading-order parton distribution function (PDF) set for the parton shower, and either a leading-order or next-to-next-to-leading-order PDF set for the simulation of MPI and the beam remnants. Predictions utilizing the tunes are produced for event shape observables in electron-positron collisions, and for minimum-bias, inclusive jet, top quark pair, and Z and W boson events in proton-proton collisions, and are compared with data. Each of the new tunes describes the data at a reasonable level, and the tunes using a leading-order PDF for the simulation of MPI provide the best description of the data.

A search for nonresonant production of Higgs boson pairs via gluon-gluon and vector boson fusion processes in final states with two bottom quarks and two photons is presented. The search uses data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s√ = 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb−1. No significant deviation from the background-only hypothesis is observed. An upper limit at 95% confidence level is set on the product of the Higgs boson pair production cross section and branching fraction into γγbb¯¯¯. The observed (expected) upper limit is determined to be 0.67 (0.45) fb, which corresponds to 7.7 (5.2) times the standard model prediction. This search has the highest sensitivity to Higgs boson pair production to date. Assuming all other Higgs boson couplings are equal to their values in the standard model, the observed coupling modifiers of the trilinear Higgs boson self-coupling κλ and the coupling between a pair of Higgs bosons and a pair of vector bosons c2V are constrained within the ranges −3.3 < κλ < 8.5 and −1.3 < c2V < 3.5 at 95% confidence level. Constraints on κλ are also set by combining this analysis with a search for single Higgs bosons decaying to two photons, produced in association with top quark-antiquark pairs, and by performing a simultaneous fit of κλ and the top quark Yukawa coupling modifier κt.

A measurement is reported of differential top quark pair (t¯t) production cross sections, where top quarks are produced at large transverse momenta. The data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC are from pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13  TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9  fb−1. The measurement uses events where at least one top quark decays as t→Wb→q¯q′b and is reconstructed as a large-radius jet with transverse momentum in excess of 400 GeV. The second top quark is required to decay either in a similar way or leptonically, as inferred from a reconstructed electron or muon, a bottom quark jet, and missing transverse momentum due to the undetected neutrino. The cross section is extracted as a function of kinematic variables of individual top quarks or of the t¯t system. The results are presented at the particle level, within a region of phase space close to that of the experimental acceptance, and at the parton level and are compared to various theoretical models. In both decay channels, the observed absolute cross sections are significantly lower than the predictions from theory, while the normalized differential measurements are well described.

Events containing one or more top quarks produced with additional prompt leptons are used to search for new physics within the framework of an effective field theory (EFT). The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, collected by the CMS experiment in 2017. The selected events are required to have either two leptons with the same charge or more than two leptons; jets, including identified bottom quark jets, are also required, and the selected events are divided into categories based on the multiplicities of these objects. Sixteen dimension-six operators that can affect processes involving top quarks produced with additional charged leptons are considered in this analysis. Constructed to target EFT effects directly, the analysis applies a novel approach in which the observed yields are parameterized in terms of the Wilson coefficients (WCs) of the EFT operators. A simultaneous fit of the 16 WCs to the data is performed and two standard deviation confidence intervals for the WCs are extracted; the standard model expectations for the WC values are within these intervals for all of the WCs probed.

A search is presented for a Higgs boson that is produced via vector boson fusion and that decays to an undetected particle and an isolated photon. The search is performed by the CMS collaboration at the LHC, using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 130 fb−1, recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016–2018. No significant excess of events above the expectation from the standard model background is found. The results are interpreted in the context of a theoretical model in which the undetected particle is a massless dark photon. An upper limit is set on the product of the cross section for production via vector boson fusion and the branching fraction for such a Higgs boson decay, as a function of the Higgs boson mass. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, assuming the standard model production rates, the observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction is 3.5 (2.8)%. This is the first search for such decays in the vector boson fusion channel. The production of Z boson pairs in proton–proton (pp) collisions, pp→(Z/γ∗)(Z/γ∗)→2ℓ2ℓ′, where ℓ,ℓ′=e or μ, is studied at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137fb−1, collected during 2016–2018. The ZZ production cross section, σtot(pp→ZZ)=17.4±0.3(stat)±0.5(syst)±0.4(theo)±0.3(lumi) pb, measured for events with two pairs of opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons produced in the mass region 60<mℓ+ℓ−<120GeV is consistent with standard model predictions. Differential cross sections are also measured and agree with theoretical predictions. The invariant mass distribution of the four-lepton system is used to set limits on anomalous ZZZ and ZZγ couplings.
